What was far more impressive was when he dropped deep and managed to pick out some great passes. Something Okazaki and many of our midfield struggle to do. His attitude was great and he got himself into some great positions. I would suggest you watch the game back and watch the many good things he did tonight apart from scoring a *hat trick. Otherwise, struggle to see any sense in your posts. As I said I may have been watching it with my blinkers on, my personal opinion nothing else. I'll look to watch it back when possible

It happens every time I see him in the first team. First half, few came away with much credit although he played in Musa with a superb ball over the top. Second half, he did so much good I genuinely don't know who you were watching. Think you'd change your mind if you watched it again but without that chip on your shoulder ? He must have murdered me in a past life I'll give it a watch when I can.
foxfanazer Posted 22 August 2017 Posted 22 August 2017 Job done in a professional manner with a few very decent performers. Can't read too much into the game as it wasn't even Sheff united strongest side. Nice to see us make relatively light work of an early round cup game though
ARM1968 Posted 22 August 2017 Posted 22 August 2017 Lot of positives tonight. Gray was magnificent in patches but made wrong decisions in others. Game time will help that. Slimani was was very good indeed. Took his goals well. Fluffed a hatrick chance. Dropped deep. Picked some great passes and was head and shoulders above Ulloa. Musa flitted in and out and and looked short on confidence. Took his goal well. Pleased for him. Chillwell was mostly very good. Mendy showed wed a few glimpses of good and the odd bit of bad. Worth persisting with in my opinion. Only Sheffield Utd, but better teams than us have stumbled against teams like that. First half was pretty even and they kept going. Decent test.

I do worry that he flatters to deceive. With 'experience'.... This is stuff he needs to work on in training. If you cannot do the 'simple stuff' right at his age yet, then there has to be question marks. I'm willing to give him more time, but right now I honestly don't want him near our defense. Hard to trust Chilwell when he makes so many mental errors every appearance. I am not seeing him improving where he has had trouble for years, like the careless passing that creates goal scoring opportunities for the other side, or Chilwell ranging too far wide or forward and bending our shape out of position when someone covers for his absence, or when he doesn't seem to realize he needs to get back asap and pauses a few seconds too long, allowing a real scoring opportunity to develop. And none of that is really touching on his lack of defensive prowess. Just wish he had a bit more Albrighton in him, he needs more junkyard dog. IDK how you get him there, perhaps you loan him out to a Championship side who don't send their backs forward, let him get a real feel for defending, IDK. But as much as I have wanted us to keep Chilwell and Gray, now I'm thinking we need to really consider whether they fit our plans. The sort of breakdowns they have are far more tolerable on more talented teams. LC needs everyone rowing the same direction.

Yeah I mean why would we want 2 highly rated England u21 players as part of our squad. They are both young and learning, their not the finished article. Chilwell is an exciting prospect the reason he probably stands out is because of his attacking flair. Maybe he will end up as a left midfielder who knows. Early days!!

I've said it before he can be clinical, but to me he offers very little else. Would of could of..!! How many times do we have to listen to that Statements of statements. He did it..!!! Where many through many seasons havent... Lazy post!!! Too desperate to post something negative..or what.!!!

Our second string team still costs more than a lot of premier league teams first 11. With 3 players costing nearly 60 million. A good performance against a second string league one squad ( albeit recently promoted)

I'm going to be unpopular for this but Slimani made my mind up for me tonight I just don't rate the guy. Fair play for his two goals, but his first he was fed through on a simple run, and rounded a keeper who was playing conference north and lower last season, his second was on a tee and he still managed to miss hit it. Other than that he very rarely challenged for any balls in the air, he was sloppy around the box, made some daft challenges and was bullied in parts by a championship teams reserve defenders. We paid £30m for this guy??? Hmm. I mean... Barcelona score a ton off its players being fed through on a simple run, right? It isn't like Vardy is scoring amazing goals with wild difficulty from outside the box, he is often 1-on-1 with the keeper with a defender trailing a step behind or to the side. Knowing when to run, and getting in position to make those runs, that's a huge part of being a striker. When we saw him earlier in the preseason, he was one of the best players on the pitch. Even last season, when he was hurt and I suspect a bit less fit than he'd like to have been bc of his groin, when he'd sub in our attack would open up as teams couldn't so easily play a deep line and double Riyad, they had to spread out and be aware of Slim at all times, which opened up quite a few scoring opportunities for us. Personally, I've never understood the "Slim and Vardy can't play together" faction, I think they are very complementary -- our problem is more we cannot play Slim like he's Shinji, we need to tailor the system slightly when he is in. Granted, Slim may have been made superfluous as a consequence of Nacho signing, but Nacho isn't even playing yet, and Shinji is going to be woefully ineffective against Man. U., he's going to spend the first 50-60 minutes on the ground after being dispossessed. I think we nee dhim to play at least 40 to have a shot at scoring two goals, an dthat is what I think we'll need minimum to get a result.
fuchsntf Posted 22 August 2017 Posted 22 August 2017 So all the misery-guts and party poopers...decide now they will have a go at another young talent..They have Chilwell in their sights.... The opposition are allowed to beat defenders sometimes...He put in some good tackles, lost some when up against 2-3 players when alone.and yes let some through.... Happens to the best of them...Far too early to get on his case...
BoyJones Posted 22 August 2017 Posted 22 August 2017 4-1 away against a championship side, most of us would have taken that at 8pm, but of course, the usual glass half empty posters have to pick faults. Slim and Musa et al are ring rusty for heavens sake, they will make mistakes, but they got the job done. Lets as look forward to the next round.
ajthefox Posted 22 August 2017 Posted 22 August 2017 Really enjoyed that second half, and there are a fair few positives to take from that given how much of a changed side it was. I do think a few are getting over-excited though, Sheff Utd were poor.

Chilwell just doesn't seem to be developing as a defender, he's making many of the same mistakes he has been making all along, but I am sure we are all rooting for him, and nobody is saying to get rid of him. But we're allowed to discuss the players after the game, yeah? Nobody is cussing the kid out or anything.

Need to play like that more instead of telling a striker to keep dropping back to midfield. Crap start but turned on the style 10 mins in to 2nd half. Fully deserved. As I have posted in separate thread in 2nd half Ulloa droppped deep instead of Slim and hence played a direct part in the 1st 2nd and 4th goals...

BenTheFox Posted 23 August 2017 Posted 23 August 2017 First half was like pulling teeth both on and off the pitch, the second half however was really enjoyable. Some positives from tonight. Gray, Slimani and Maguire all superb. Ndidi, Amartey, Fuchs, Knight all very solid.
UPinCarolina Posted 23 August 2017 Posted 23 August 2017 I would be willing to wager that Silmani has the highest goals to minutes ratio in the side.
Dan Posted 23 August 2017 Posted 23 August 2017 That was pretty easy really. They were dreadful although not surprising given they've made as many changes as us. First half was a slog but you could sense we had another gear or two in us to really get at them in the second half and we delivered. Ndidi MOTM I'd say.

I don't think people are unfairly criticising Chilwell, it is concerning that he is still getting skinned easily by most wingers even at championship level after being in and around the first team for his 3rd season now. I am desperate for him to succeed here but his defending leaves a lot to be desired at times.
