The way certain news channels go way over the top when a celebrity dies.  The BBC led with the death of Dr Michael Mosley.   I know he was one of their presenters, but they said that he was described in some quarters as a ‘ national treasure’.  I understand that he was a very nice man and of course the circumstances of his death was sad, but too be perfectly candid I had barely heard of him.  To put this story above say the snap French election, or other world events is rather nonsensical.

Really enjoyed getting rained on in 12 degree London today then riding home in an aggressively-air conditioned Metropolitan line train. So refreshing.

Harsh to talk as if he was just a celebrity.  He was one of the foremost science / medical TV journalists of his generation.  A great communicator and behind a lot of TV in this space for the past 20 years or so.  Had a huge role in improving the health of a lot of people.  Just because you weren't one of them doesn't mean it isn't news.  Many people would say the same about coverage of a sports person for example.

I was not saying his death was not news.  My point is that the BBC chose to lead with it, when I would argue, rather more seismic events were occurring ie Macron’s snap election, which could result in Le Pen’s power base being significantly strengthened.  I assume it was because he was a BBC presenter, which if so was rather parochial of them.

Grass is always greener. Or browner, as the case may be.

I’ve no idea who he is.

I'm guessing with Michael Mosley it depends on whether much factual BBC content is consumed in your house.

I went for lunch on Sunday with some friends (husband, wife, four kids, aged 12-18) and this was big, big news for all present.

Mind you, I was telling somebody today about seeing Louis Theroux live at the weekend and they hadn't heard of him, so again it all just depends on the media sphere you choose to inhabit isn't it?

See I totally agree with you about people of Michael Moselys level of fame. Outside the shows he made you didn't really see him anywhere else in media. Similar celebrity profile and reach as Strictly dancers or regular day time TV guests. If you don't watch the shows they are on you won't know who they are. But Loiuis Theroux? Surely everyone knows who he is. You don't have to have watched a show of his to have stumbled across him somewhere in the media. Can't get my head around having never heard of Theroux.

Well I sort of assumed that would be the case, he's been relatively high profile since the mid 1990s? But evidently not. The chap I was talking to did a Google image search and just didn't recognise him.

If I'd never stumbled across him when his programmes were being broadcast, I'm sure I would've been told about them by friends or read an article or interview in the press,

I agree though, it seemed unbelievable at first

Louis is a lot more niche than Michael Mosely.  Never seen him on the one show etc, his books are not all over bookshops, social media presence is relatively muted if you don't follow him.  I am fan of Louis and I can still go months without seeing anything.

You're right though, it's absolutely miserable. Hate it.

I don't know what's happening to me, but I'd like to see Scotland do well at the Euros.

Maybe not win it at England's expense.. but to have a good run in it.

Will be cheering for them for the first time ever on Friday. Not sure how to do it, any tips welcome.

There's too much focus on Taylor Swift and her impact.

For a minute I thought this was the election debate thread and was VERY confused.

Start with a couple of cans of Tenants Super Strength follow this up with a couple of large Scotch and Iron Brus. You’ll be fine

I have always  had a bit of a soft spot for the ' home nations' to be honest.

It's like going to watch your brother in his 100 metre race  and cheering him on and then  remember how annoying he is when you get home.

But you still love him :D
