See the Millwall thread. Plenty on there quite happy for us to lose and get knocked out.

The entitlement thing (for me) is when some fans now think we’re too big time for the League Cup.
Not long ago we were over the moon to win it and have a proud tradition in the competition.

Now some people are like ‘Meh’ whatever and I find that bizarre.
It might be the best chance we’ve got of winning silverware this season.

I am going to Millwall and hope we win. But I am very 'meh' about it. I don't think that's entitlement, I'm just suffering a bit from football fatigue and we're not O'Neill's Leicester anymore, it's not as important as it once was to us. I don't see anything bizarre about that.

It's like England this summer. The paranoia over whether people cared enough put me off even more.

Not sure the club would come out and say that. It's clearly still important to the likes of Man City...

I assume he means to him as a fan and I agree.

When you're shit and the best you can hope for is winning the League Cup then obviously winning the League Cup is everything.

Go and look at photos from the last Johnstones Paint Trophy final or the FA Shield final (pre covid) or whatever, I'm sure you'll see loads of fans celebrating like its the best day of their lives.

Everything is relative, isn't it.

When you've won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Community Shield and  followed your club across Europe in continental competition then its quite easy to feel somewhat flat about watching our second or third string run out against Millwall (one of the most boring draws possible) in a competition that everyone know has next to know prestige attached to it nowadays.

Is it a shame that the league Cup has been devalued? Yes absolutely, 100%. But I'm not going to pretend to be hyped for it because I think it historically had merit.

I meant as a fan and a club.

It was hugely important to the club in the late 90s because top 6 teams didn't have the huge squads they now do, which meant the League Cup was a fantastic chance for a club of our size to win some silverware, get into Europe and give fans the kind of experiences they hadn't had for decades. That's not so much the case now. Despite having a better squad we are paradoxically less likely to win the League Cup while more likely to challenge for Europe and other silverware. Listening to Rodgers' interviews on the FA Cup and its importance to us, we seemed to have really targeted it the last two years in the way we used to target the Coca Cola.

So no I don't think it's anywhere near as important as it was in the 90s, when at times it seemed like the League Cup was everything for us. Those wins in 97 and 2000 were huge. If we win it in 2022 it won't have anything like the same impact on the fans or the club.

I might be in a minority, but I’m actually quite glad that it’s back to not every game being on tv!

It’s kinda nice to get a break sometimes without a nagging feeling that I really should be watching…

And whilst I'm on the subject (this should be in Grinds my Gears really) there's nothing more infuriating than the shouty negative moaner playbook technique, when answered or referred to with absolute accuracy, in a way they cannot 'yeah but' you back, just pretend you never said it in the first place, because it doesn't fit their narrow perspective, or it clangs all too loudly against their congnitive biases. It's much the same as fans who only ever see good or bad in a player because they've already folded their arms and made their mind up.

Excellent post even though you spelt "cognitive" incorrectly. :appl:Get thee over to "Linguistic Pedantry". :P

Michael Caine tells a great story about this quote. John Wayne was asked, at a charity do, to read it for a big donation, and mid-way through it stopped and asked 'Who wrote this s**t anyway?'

I've heard that story somewhere. Maybe John Wayne was a bit thick with no real knowledge of theatre. Just a lump who played shallow male lead parts in films?

I felt it was a good idea to ask about Ian Stringers' whereabouts in the thread that's now locked, even though I felt guilty when some posters thought it wasn't for the best interests towards him and it got subsequently locked.

Perfectly reasonable thread to start - the guy's been commentating on us for the most eventful period of our clubs history so for him to almost 'disappear' I think it's reasonable to ask the question.

If it is for the reasons stated in the thread it would be good if it was mentioned or if he came out to confirm as I think he'd be surprised at the amount of support he'd receive. Never been his biggest fan for commentary but the guys one of us so he'd have my support.
