I had the pleasure of hearing someone I knew from uni on a well known sports podcast and sent her a message on facebook saying well done.

I was surprised as to how negatively she reacted.
People don't seem to be congratulatory or supportive much these days, sadly.

That's a real shame.

Then again, some people do see the negative in a positive.

I once complimented a woman on how lovely she looked, that she seemed in good shape and had perhaps lost weight.

Her reaction: "Oh, was I fat before?"

PS I have the worst ever photo of me, back when I was 18 1/2 stone, and happily show it to people. I see the progress not the past.

I believe that there should be a version of the Olympics where people can take whatever drugs they like. See how far we can really push the records.

I say its unpopular. I don't even know if its unpopular. You can bet it will be now that I've said it.

I've always said the same about boxing/MMA. Have a steroid division and sit back and enjoy.

Get some decent waivers in place; don't ask me to cover the PL/PA and we're laughing.

SOLD! SOLD TO CHANNEL 5.

Who'd present it? I really want to say Kris Akubusi. I'm not suggesting he has a drug issue. Or that he's desperate. Or even that that's how you spell his name or that's he's still alive.

If you can't just endlessly reply to your self or even your other self or that other pr1ck then I don't want to play any more and neither does my mate who is also me. Maybe the anagram guy though; remember him? What a hero? I think he got deleted too quick. Too much fun. Too little to do? Who knows? Who cares?

You're on a horse.

Never heard of that before so googled it.

Some interesting stuff.

Yep. I hope you might see now why some people might react as they do when they have had (or have seen) people basically inferring that circumstances in their lives that are obviously beyond their control are in fact their fault for "not doing enough" or whatever.

It's sad that a positive, congratulatory mindset so often goes hand in hand with that sentiment.

I would say you certainly shouldn’t feel bad about it. As long as you’re aware (and you seem to be) that you’ve had some help and some luck that many others haven’t. As long as you’re not saying ‘f**k you lot, I’m all right and that’s all I care about’ (I’m not for a minute suggesting you are saying that btw!) then no, don’t feel bad.

Pretty much this.

There's a very great deal of our lives that are beyond our control, but that scares people.

Cheers Geoff. I started out in your industry but got out early on in my career when I realised how few the jobs were and how London centric they are. See above for perhaps why.

Yeah…but can you imagine living in a world where everyone has a scientific, analytical mindset? :teehee:

I've got mates who have had, objectively, harder lives than me who have worked hard but are doing worse than me. I don't really feel that bad about it and I refuse to be made to feel bad because my family supported me. Apparently that's an unpopular opinion.

It's the way of the world isn't it. Some people have parents better off who can give them the leg up or financially support. Problem is, if you whip yourself into a frenzy about something like that then you're going to torture yourself forever. They'd take it if they were in your shoes.

Feel like I'm stalking with a multiquote of the same person lol but what kind of negative reaction was it? Was it out of character from the person you knew at uni? Just seems strange that people can feel they can be so impolite from a quick well done message!

It's OK to be shit at your job.

What makes you say that? I assume trolling or trying to make a point, but genuinely interested to hear any actual reasoning behind this one.

I'm not sure it benefits anyone if you're that bad at your job lol

I wouldn't assume anything.

Unpopular opinions provoke, no? Are all contributions to this thread therefore "trolling"? Our just simple statements of opinion?

Reverse engineer it if you like. When might it be OK for someone to be shit at their job? Under what circumstances might it occur? What does 'shit' even mean in this context?

I messed up on one of my jobs years ago. I only discovered it afterwards, and I suspect it remains undetected to this day. No lives were lost, nor houses burned down but nonetheless it was a fvck up. Not entirely my responsibility (in that I can point to reasons) but it was under my control. I can honestly say I was shit at my job that day (well, weeks)

Just hope the next time i go on holiday the pilot of the plane doesn't share your opinion.

Of course.

In the anticpated order of things, one hopes a 'shit' pilot would be weeded out before being awarded their wings.

But if they were 'shit' (I'll clarify my meaning - not very good at their job), I'd get that. People, as a rule, do the best they can.

Fair to say. lol

It would be a saner world, probably a longer lived world...but it surely would be a more boring one.

But as a bonus you wouldn’t have to Wade through a swamp of influencers ‘opinions’, that are largely taken as a matter of fact, which I personally would welcome haha!

Like on this thread, I don't really have much of an issue with opinions as a rule, even when they're incorrect and stated as fact it's more annoying than anything else.

It does become a problem when those opinions are stated as fact and then have the power to negatively affect other people's futures, though. Scientific examples include anti vaxxer sentiment and climate change ignorance, other examples include all kinds of bigotry where the person saying the thing has more power than the person targeted.

Likewise, one of my biggest pet hates. If a large cohort study has provided a sound bit of evidence, then it is fact…. Some self obsessed person with a blue tick on twitter who has the opposite opinion to such facts, is not.

To be fair the world is a minefield of information, accurate, inaccurate and false. Problem comes for some people they’re not able to distinguish between them, and they unfortunately fall foul of influencers spreading inaccurate information because they’re accessible and produce a lot of it.

Healthy opinions on topics is perfectly fine, and can promote good debates!

Nickleback aren't nearly as bad a band as people make out.

Mostly crap but have done some good stuff too. Mainly their heavier songs like Burn It To The Ground and Something In Your Mouth.l off the Dark Horse album.
