Guest the fox Posted 7 October 2017 Posted 7 October 2017 i was thinking, if huth is back, why not play maguire as a DM? he can push the ball upfield better than most of the players in the squad. it would be like what spurs do maguire is our dier, and n'didi is our wanyama, if only we had a overlapping RB, so the team can switch to a 3ATB with wes, huth and harry while he RB and ben can run the wings 2 seasons and no new RB
The Doctor Posted 7 October 2017 Posted 7 October 2017 4 hours ago, the fox said: yes, it's a small sample, but as you can see, we all can twist words the way we like. and to take it even further, vardy hasn't scored an open play goal since week 1 vs arsenal. and because you apparently can't be able to count pen goals, vardy is on a 5 game scoring drought. Didn't realise heading in a rebound wasn't open play... You're also missing/ignoring the point he's making - riyad isn't really creating or scoring in the league, this season or last.

I did say with the tactics this season our TWO threats have no chance as the midfield never have the ball to pass to them.

We'll need to start Iborra in what should be a much easier game for him than against Bournemouth. I think your right. We will have 40% possession and make them look like Brazil if they aren't all on form.
maddog Posted 9 October 2017 Posted 9 October 2017 We will probably start this game in the relegation zone and West Brom have done well at KP recently, 7 points from their previous 3 visits I believe. That said by the time this match comes around it will be almost 2 months since The Baggies won a match. I think it would be the beginning of the end for Shakespeare if we lost this one, keeping us in the drop zone and dropping 7 points behind a mid-table rival this early in the season.
Ric Flair Posted 9 October 2017 Posted 9 October 2017 A win could start the road to a bit of a decent run as we've some favourable games but it all depends on how we approach them, it's time to try something new and give ourselves a chance of long term gain.
volpeazzurro Posted 9 October 2017 Posted 9 October 2017 It's a win win really. If we win we get 3 points. If we lose, hopefully it will be enough for our owners to ditch Shakespeare! So perhaps it's nailed on for a dull draw with dough boy dull telling us all that we played well and that it all went to plan.
Dawko Posted 9 October 2017 Posted 9 October 2017 Should never stick Mahrez, our most skilful player, out on the edge of the pitch being made to track back. We have real wingers who can do that. If Mahrez can get past fullbacks on the wing he can get past central defenders, and from the central midfield he can create mayhem for the opposition.

Bit of a lack of respect shown to someone who has provided us with almost a decade of service, and was integral to the building process which saw us rise from our lowest ebb to our greatest glories. Sure, he might not be management material- that's the feeling I'm starting to get too- but as an assistant, he's as good as they get and it would be a blow to lose him from the coaching setup altogether.

I hope you're wrong about that (but suspect you're right). I thought he looked good on his debut v. Liverpool in the League Cup. He should at least be on the bench as first replacement centre back for PL matches. Presumably Maguire & Wes are now deemed first choices, but what's the point having Huth on the bench and sending Dragovic back disillusioned after a year? With Maguire & Dragovic (& even Fuchs), we now have the quality and style of centre backs to play 3 at the back, with wing-backs (Albrighton & Chilwell) and 3 in the middle, which would address our main weakness - central midfield. Who the 3 in the middle would be is another question: Ndidi, Iborra & Mahrez in a free role behind the strikers? Would probably be more compact with James or King as 3rd midfielder, though we'd then have to alternate Shinji & Mahrez....

If they don't have a replacement of quality lined up and give them the permission to reshape the staff, it could still be a loss/loss. We need to reinvent ourselves, I think. I previously, maybe naively, thought that we could carve out an identity playing our brand of football - but I'm seeing now we've not got the players or the staff to do it.

That's because I don't have a great deal of respect for him anymore. For his first period with NP yes, and probably a good coach then. He was also there for the majority of that first season of the great escape when for most of it (using those self same tactics he's using now), the pair of them nearly got us relegated. I believe that whatever the influence was, whether Cambiasso or the players themselves, NP and Shakespeare had little input into the great escape. Ranieri came and due to him we won the league because it was his insight and changing things that helped shape things. Things needed changing that next season as the same system was unsustainable. Arguably in midfield we have had at the start of this season, a better selection of players than what Ranieri had. Ranieri tried but failed, the changes weren't popular with the players, tough! Shakespeare was and is by the evidence of this season's tactics and team selections, too close to certain players. His job was to back up his manager and coach the team accordingly full stop. Do you really think he did that looking back or do you feel that there was an element of colusion with the players? The press seemed to shout snakes in a loud voice and, although prone to sensationalism to sell papers, it would be nieve to assume that they weren't getting some inside information. The players rallied against Liverpool without Shakespeares influence I believe . They then under his management started to decline towards at the end of the season dramatically. So, two seasons of millions of pounds worth of players who can hardly get a sniff , because they've got to fit in to for many of them, a tired little 422, have suddenly become bad players overnight? Is Shakespeare really picking the team? Why did he persevere with the last year's useless Marhez and not have the balls to drop him like Ranieri did? If I was a new manager I wouldn't want him anywhere near me, not because of his coaching abilities but because I could never trust him. As he was a late appointment I think our owners were after someone better but they are quite honourable people and I just wonder whether they wanted to foist Shakespeare on the potential new manager as part of the deal? No, to me he's a pernicious, inept, sneaky little poor excuse of a manager who I will be pleased to see the back of. But ....if we get 3 points against West Brom, all of a sudden it will be the 'platform to build on' routine. If we keep him I doubt we'll be relegated because our squad is considerably better than certain other teams when they start to pick injuries up. However we won't progress, it will be like a slow death because players will want to leave in the summer due to lack of ambition and it will be difficult to attract decent replacements.

Can't disagree with large parts of that. You're doing him and Pearson a discredit on the great escape though, they certainly laid the foundations and everything just seemed to click after months of almost competitive performances. I wouldn't say Shakespeare has had better midfield options this season either- Ranieri had Ndidi and Drinkwater to select in the second half of last season- Shakespeare has had Ndidi, an unfit Iborra and an ineligible Silva from what you'd describe as 'first team standard' players. I don't think it was a backstabbing with Ranieri either- it's obvious that everyone had lost faith in his methods, and when that happens it's game over for the manager. Talk of a mutiny or coup are pretty farfetched, it was just a situation which happens all the time in football, but received plenty of scrutiny and attention because of what happened the year before. I sincerely doubt that Shakespeare actively tried to force Ranieri out so he could have a crack at being manager. As I say though, you've highlighted some issues which he needs to get sorted ASAP- the formation, tired team selections, and the feeling that we're on the decline which will lead to our star players wanting out next summer. We've got winnable games coming up, and I'm giving him this run to prove he's up to it.

The Algerians on here may be surprised to hear me concur with this view. Just get the ****er as far away from our goal as possible. It should, in theory work. On the few occasions it’s been tried it hasn’t I don’t think, but I would say worth another go. We we have to get our offensive players closer together up the pitch, to start creating the chances which have been virtually non existent recently in open play.
