Foxes1 Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 Seems like the Spanish police don't like Catalans as well as football supporters. Thugs http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-41457238
Milo Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 It doesn't seem to getting too much news coverage. Pretty appalling interpretation of democracy and abuse of governmental power. Another civil war?? ?

Innovindil Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 They're doing their job and upholding the Spanish constitution, exactly what they are paid to do.
VLC86 Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 Heard the protesters were signing Gibraltar is ours.

If the Spanish are so confident that the majority of Catalans don't want to have independence then ignore it and give it no legitimacy. Getting violent and smashing it up and treating it like crime of the century is absolutely stupid. Imagine if we did that to the Scots, it'd be a sure fire way to make sure they vote for independence.

If it's illegal then so is the result an you can ignore it. Have some faith in your courts instead of bringing out the remnants of the Fracoist fascist state to beat down old men .

And German soldiers were just following orders in the forties. There's footage of fvcking firefighters protecting protestors from them FFS.
FoxesDeb Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 They're nothing more than thugs in a uniform. Hated them ever since the way I was treated in Madrid in '97, and they haven't changed one bit. Absolutely astounding they get away with it in this day and age. Cvnts, every single one of them.

The 'they were just following orders' argument is ultimately an apology for authoritarianism, as you yourself are demonstrating here. We need to engage our moral reasoning here to find out if police response is appropriate, not just bluntly accept the state's decisions as legitimate.
Stadt Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 Spain's corrupt as **** for western standards, for such a beautiful country it somehow manages to be a backwater at the same time

FoxesDeb Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 BBC reporting nearly 350 injured http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-41461032
Webbo Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 I was in Barcelona on Wednesday. There were loads of Catalan flags and flags saying si . I didn't see a single anti independence poster or flag, although its possible that some people feel intimidated. I saw one poster in a window and it seems like they're claiming most of the East Coast including Valencia and a bit beyond.

Even if the vote is considered illegal by Madrid, it should be decided in court, not with a baton around the head. Regardless, the Police acting in this way, which they are renowned for, will probably just galvanize the Catalans even more. The Spanish police are thugs.
Christoph Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 Surely this brute force is only going to feed the fire for independence now.
Harry - LCFC Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 Similar comment to what the two above posters have said. The government's bullying of the Catalonian people will lessen their feelings of loyalty to the Spanish nation.
Stadt Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 It doesn't matter where you are in Spain it seems yet still Guardia Civil are animals. The press here was gleeful that "scum" Leicester fans were getting swatted whereas in reality it was 99% innocent people getting attacked

David Guiza Posted 1 October 2017 Posted 1 October 2017 My old Constitutional Law lecturer used to bleat on about how we effectively live in an Elective Dictatorship and I think that terminology is well expressed in Spain/Catalonia currently. From what I have read and watched it would appear that virtually every aspect of the protest/vote has been peaceful and democratic and they seemingly aren't being given the legal option via the courts/government of Spain. How long until the Cornish take note?
