22 next month, if you're not knocking on the door by that age then you probably never will. I'm glad to see he'll have a career in the lower leagues.

Connor was offered a contract, he turned it down though.

It was a well intended initiative from the PL to enable players to stay in the game longer....but unfortunately, it is proving counter-productive as 22-23 year olds who would previously have been 'filtered out' of the system are now clogging up the pathway and restricting opportunities for promising younger players coming through.

The Josh Gordon case is a classic example of a 23 year-old player who will never play for our 1st team but is still occupying the main striker role for the U23s and denying younger 18-20 year olds the chance to play against 18-20 year olds from Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City etc, etc...

I'm guessing the plan is that we will make a few quid out of selling him on to a lower league club once his contract expires next season but should we really be focussing our energies on making 'a few quid' or should we be aiming for something bigger and better with our current resources...?!?

(PS I think we would need to sell him for >£300k to make any kind of profit considering the fee we paid for him and the wages we will have paid him)

It will be a fine balance between developing younger players with either first team potential or sell on potential and staying in the top division. Players like Josh Gordon are only here to keep us in the top division and give our better prospects a chance to play a higher standard of football. We'll already know his chances of becoming a first team player are next to zero.

I'd wager there are only a handful of players from about 14 years old upwards that the coaches have any hope for but the rest are kept on to help the really talented kids have a team around them to play with. In an ideal world we would stay in the division with as young a team as possible. I'd imagine Josh Gordon isn't keeping a prodigious teenager out the team.

He probably knew himself that he was a few levels below Chilwell who is six months younger and was wasting his time at Leicester playing development football when a lower league career was going to be his level.

But he was knocking on the door.

Wasn't he one of the three nominated for YPOTY alongside Choudhury and Knight?

I'm happy for him to get a pro contract at a team where he could start. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the prem within a couple of years.

Always seemed a good honest player.

I suppose he's also got Elder to compete with. Personally, i thought he was more promising than elder (despite his successful loan period at Wigan) so would have preferred to see us offload Elder and get Wood out on loan.

Josh Eppiah?!?    19 years old and a fantastic player who should have been playing more regularly at U23s level last season. When he did start, he was usually played out of position on left/right to accommodate the more direct/physical presence of Josh Gordon down the middle.  Was called up by Belgium U21s last season but was injured at the time

Very highly rated player who will be sought after by other clubs if/when his contract expires unless LCFC offer hm a signficantly better deal

Spot on!   100% agree.

Although fully deserving his nomination for YPOTY, it was also possibly more to do with increasing his profile and transfer value as Bradford originally tabled their bid in the Jan transfer window which LCFC turned down as they were determined to try and win the U23s championship and didn't want to sell/loan any of the players.

Apparently, both he and Josh Knight were previously told they were not good enough for LCFC by Rudkin/Beaglehole.......until Shakespeare saw them play and wanted them to train with the 1st team.....at which point they became regular starters for the U23s.

The rest is history...!

He was offered a contract by LCFC that was way below his market value in terms of salary expectations and way below what had been previously suggested to his agent in January.

Bradford were offering a 2-3 year deal and potential pathway to first team......and a significantly higher salary than LCFC were offering.

NO brainer really...

REPORT: Leicester City Under 23's vs The Boro'

Manager Nicky Eaden got a first glimpse of his new side in action against a strong Leicester City development squad who finished 3rd in the Premier League 2 last season behind Arsenal and Liverpool.

The City side looked to win the ball high and shut down any space for Boro’ as they tried to bring to ball out. Former Foxes duo Harry Panayiotou and Kairo Mitchell worked hard together but found it difficult in a tight contest. Leicester City had the best chance in the first of the three 30 minute periods, with Romanian defender Alex Pascanu coming closest, however, newly-signed Boro’ shot-stopper Joslain Mayebi was equal to his powerful header.

The likes of Miles Addison and, recently-signed, Theo Wharton were introduced in the second period, but on 33 minutes Raúl Uche’s header from 10 yards found the back of the net. The Spanish forward returned to Leicester’s development side after a loan spell with Real Betis B last season.

Entering the final half-hour period of the game, Boro created an opportunity on 68 minutes but the ball fell straight into the arms of the City keeper. Down the other end, Mayebi was called into action on two occasions and made great saves from close range in the 75th and 81st minute.

Theo Wharton helped to fizz out a clear chance on goal with a solid last-ditch tackle near the end and Boro’ were unable to snatch a late equaliser as the game came to a close with just the one goal to separate the sides. There were plenty of positive signs for Eaden as his side begins to take shape, and it was also a valuable opportunity to look at several trialists as they attempted to earn a contract at Liberty Way.

Won 3 nil. Kapustka, Thomas and Conor Tee scored

Begs the question why wasnt Thomas in France?

Meant to be going out on loan but still surprising we didn't take him as a number of others on that trip will be leaving too.

Connor Tee is the one to watch this season for the U23's, had a great year for the U18's last season.

There's very little been reported on the midfielder we got from Blackburn in January for a few million, Callum Wright. Another I'd have expected to be involved.

Probably because most of the youth were taken to make up the numbers in areas that had many first teamers at the WC (strikers and CBs). We probably already had too many first team midfielders/wingers available.

Merc

Leicester City under-23s goalkeeper Daniel Iversen is undergoing a trial at Oldham with a view to a loan move.

The Dane, the development squad’s no.1 during their Premier League 2 title challenge last season, kept goal for Oldham in their 2-2 pre-season draw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Despite conceding twice, Iversen impressed and made a number of saves for the Latics.

The 20-year-old will hope his performance earns him a temporary move to the League Two club with his first-team chances at City minimal, particularly after the £12m signing of Danny Ward from Liverpool.

Iversen and fellow under-23s goalkeeper Max Bramley travelled with City’s first team to the pre-season training camp in Evian this month, but with three senior goalkeepers in the squad – Ward, Kasper Schmeichel and Eldin Jakupovic – neither are likely to get an opportunity this term.

Quote my Danny Ward post just............

Obviously a lot of money and his worth has been created away from the clubs he signed for.

Over 8 years

Wrexham 0 Appearances

Liverpool 2 Appearances

Loans 70 Appearances

Our most valued development players have all experienced playing in the lower leagues be it signed  from or loaned to.

Something we should be addressing more.

Sounds good. There was another youth keeper we rotated Iversen with. I guess we'll use him and give Jak and Ward the occasional outing in the u23s.
