I came across these figures earlier today on a Reddit Soccer thread, which I think makes for very interesting reading. It shows that according to net spend, we've been the 14th biggest investors worldwide since 2015/16, coming in just behind Juventus!

I won't go into whether or not that money has been well spent (we all know the answer to that one), but I do think it highlights the investment our owners are putting into the team and their commitment to trying to make us a competitive force in European football (albeit more Europa League than Champions League). It does also highlight that we under performed last season and given the investment should feel that 9th place is a disappointment, but it also shows there is plenty of reasons to be optimistic, with continued investments both in the team (Ricardo signing) and off field with the new Adidas deal, expansion of the stadium and new training facility.

Should Mahrez go, our net spend will recover a lot, but I imagine we will reinvest that money into the first team.

The Italian teams seem to have a hell of a lot of Departures.

These are all the English teams since 15/16... when you consider the extra we got from winning the league and the champions league, it's not that high. We've earned probably £100m more than most similar sized clubs on the list, but only spent about £25m more than most, less than Watford and not much more than Palace.

This can't  be over 3 years as we'd  have got more than £123m in that time. Probably more like £500m since 2015?

It's player income and not total income.

In transfer fees?

I see now. It would be interesting to see it against overall income.

To think Sunderland spent £110m and have League 1 to thank for it.

Spent £60,000 less than Tottenham in the same time as well with hugely differing results.

Tbf we've made loads of money so we're entitled to spend it. It's not been reckless spending.

Yes I'd agree with you, almost all of that spend has come since earning it from our PL win and run in the Champions League. It's not a sugar daddy situation like Chelsea or Man City.

Unfortunately, it does highlight how we wasted a lot of money. Mendy / Musa / Slimani was a lot of money that has not worked out. To be fair if Mahrez is sold, it will recoup the cost of all of those players and then some, though we would lose one of the best players we've ever had.

Every club signs bad signings as every transfer is a risk. I also think that our signings last season were pretty good. Nacho and Silva are probably the only ones that haven't lived up to their price tags but both of those are at the world cup and showing signs of improvement, Nacho especially. None of them were complete busts like Musa and Mendy. Though Mendy can consider himself quite unfortunate with injuries.

Looking at those figures, Chelsea have proved you don’t have to spend ridiculous money.

They spent £200m on; Zapacosta, Barkley, Drinkwater, Morata, Bakayoko & Rudiger last summer.

Look at their numbers for arrivals and departures. Their business model for the last few years rests on trading fringe players. Spending on the first team is clearly much higher than that chart suggests.

Had it not been for the Kante and Drinky sales we would be fifth lol lol

That's not strictly true. If we didn't sell Kante & Drinkwater for £65m (ish) then we probably wouldn't have spent a similar amount trying to replace them (Ndidi, Silva, Iborra, Mendy).
