Where did you end up?

might be able to give you a few pointers near the areas you went

ive been all over the county today, but can’t recall a book reading cyclist.

I cycled along the river from Jesus Green out towards Chesterton and beyond, ended up in a village called Fen Ditton, then I sat in the garden of the Green Dragon by the river which was nice and peaceful. Cycling by the river and through Stourbridge Common and that kind of way was very pleasant, but I was cycling quite aimlessly, didn't have anywhere in mind. Pointers would be great, cheers :)

Nice little route that.

Plough in Fen Ditton was always where I took first dates ?

If you follow the cycle path next to the river it goes to Horningsea which again is nice.

However I’m not 100% sure if you can cross.

Coton area is nice( lovely pub there ) need to check cycle paths though for you.If anything like me I hate country roads cycling if they are rat runs.

let me ask a few people and see what they come up with.

what college are you at?

you are one intelligent man to get to Cambridge.

my daughter is doing her As at Hills atm

politics,Economics English Lit

and hopes to do Politics and international Relations.

It won’t be Cambridge though!!!

Another place where I can really unwind is in Mauritius.  I like a little place on the west coast called Flic en Flac (though there are many others that are also peaceful).  I took the two photos on the nearest beach facing north and south at 2.30 pm on a Tuesday afternoon in August.

It  does have some beautiful and calming places. Not just the beaches but also inland. The (posh) north end of the island is very different to the south. The north is where loads of money has been invested and is (was?) a popular destination for weddings.

My wife and I got married out there (in a registry office, no wedding do) as she is of Mauritian descent - so it was a kind of roots thing for her. We saw a lot of the island; cycled around it (literally), caught local buses to places, staying in cheap hotels (some amusing stories there!), and walked in a couple of the national parks. The levels of poverty out there (shanty towns) was a surprise to me, I wasn't expecting that, but it is both stunning and tranquil. Would love to go back but we're skint these days and can't afford the air fare!

Sounds like a good honeymoon to me.

My wife is also Mauritian which is why I know a little of the island.  We were similarly skint when the children were growing up but now we're both retired have more time (and money, now the mortgage is gone) for leisure.

York, Bamburgh and Seville for me.

I feel like I'm in 2016 and this is the "who do you want in the CL?' thread.

I would be happy to sit in a deck chair, in a farmyard on a warm day, surrounded by chickens, geese, goats, sheep, and pigs, wallowing in the cacophony of sound they make. The smell of country life, wafting through the warm air, would be exhilarating.

Ahh, oi be a country lad at heart.

Anywhere overlooking the sea or large expanse of water, seaside, lakes, lochs love them all.

I guess it comes from growing up in the East Midlands about as far away from the coast as you could get in this country.

Canoeing on the river Wye with a fishing rod on a hot summers day.

Beaching the boat in a secluded spot catching a barbel or two and then back in the canoe

to repeat the experience further down the river.

Beautiful part of the World .

Contrast this with walking through Leicester City Centre ... dodging the beggars starting their third can of

special brew at 11 in the morning and realising that of all the people walking around you are probably the

only one born in this country.

This thread is great and I think it's impossible to read it without getting a desire to explore new places and find some new quiet spots. I'm gonna cycle out somewhere in rural Cambridgeshire tomorrow with a book and see if I can find somewhere quiet and peaceful.

Dangerous!

Love the view at Wast Water.

Some other Lakes highlights for me

Climbing Coniston Old Man and then a pint of Bluebird in the Black Bull Inn.

Lamb Stew and pint of tea in the Flock Inn at Rosthwaite, Borrowdale

Cow Pie at The George, Keswick

Spotting Eagles in the Naddle Forrest

Sharp Edge and Striding Edge for real "I'm going to die" moments

Ullswater

Ennerdale Forest

Having a week staying in Coniston later this year. Will give the Black Bull Inn a visit. Hoping to do Scafell Pike again, only did it once and it was shrouded in cloud and tipping it down. I've never been so wet in my life. All I could think was, "I'm IN the clouds. How can it be raining?!"

How do you realise this, and why does it matter?

Understood the question love ... what nation are you supporting at the World Cup ? ... assume it's not going to be England.

Why would you assume that? lol
