Why are some players allowed to have first names on shirts? Last match commentator refered to Pereira as Ricardo throughout. So whats his name?

First names on shirts, or even worse, nicknames, it's just not right.

Portuguese and Brazilian players are commonly known by their first names or nicknames because Portuguese surnames are common as fvck. 1/10 Portuguese people have the surname Silva, and 1/20 have Pereira, which is why they prefer to be called Adrien and Ricardo respectively.

They also tend to have multiple surnames, both paternal and maternal, don't they? Going by their first name only probably just simplifies things. Especially when those surnames end up being too long to easily fit on the shirt.

Doesn't really make much difference at the end of the day.

They do, so for instance Ricardo's full surname is Barbosa Pereira and Silva's is Perruchet da Silva. That said, so do Spanish languages - Ulloas was Ulloa Fernandez and he just used a single surname.

While we're at it why is Iniachio allowed to have accents on his shirt?

Dunno who that is, but for Iheanacho it's because that's how it's actually spelt.

You know this has been going on for years right?

Might not have had names on the back of their shirts in years gone by but you've heard of Pele and Eusebio?

Kaka, Romario, Dunga, Ronaldinho?

so pereira is too common but ricardo isn’t? even we’ve had about 4 portuguese players ever and two have preferred to be known by the apparently unique name of ricardo. it’s a bloody joke i’m tellin ya.

I think you should have your brand name or twitter handle on your shirt.

Baseball has been there and done that for "players weekend" the last couple seasons.

Noticed it on the weekend with one at Wolves too, they kept calling him Jonny and he's got Otto across his shoulders. It's bizzare really, even the Brazilian lads have the same name for comms & on their shirts

If there are two players with the same first name, one (usually the younger player or the one newer to the team) sometimes use a variant of their name; e.g. Ronaldo Nazário (R9) was previously using the name Ronaldinho ("little Ronaldo") in Brazil to distinguish himself from yet another Ronaldo, then reverted to Ronaldo when he moved to Europe. Funnily enough because of this, the more well-known Ronaldinho was actually known as Ronaldinho Gaúcho in Brazil to distinguish the two. Confusing, innit? Other players will use their full names (e.g. Gabriel Jesus, Roberto Carlos, David Luiz, Dani Alves)
