Trav Le Bleu Posted 20 September 2019 Posted 20 September 2019 Just had a look at the UK top 40 singles chart. Now, I've not been interested in the charts for about 30 years, because I realised quite young that I didn't care what other people were listening to, or what was popular, I knew what I liked. Music I listened to often didn't trouble the top 40. But I've just looked at the current top 40 and there's not a single band in there. Not even a boy/girlband. The blandness and lack of variety is staggering... just Latin R&B and rap music. I know there's still a lot of great new music, but the chances of it reaching mass audiences seem fewer and fewer. NB, I'm not saying all R&B and rap is rubbish, just that variety is the spice of life. 95% of most any art is miss able, so lets mix it up.

Just goes in cycles doesn’t it, not even 10 years ago the top 40 would have been full of girl bands and piss poor indie bands. I do think Hip Hop, Grime or ‘Urban’ for lack of a better word has adapted far better to digital/streaming though, which helps

It has also created scenarios where certain acts have 4 or 5 songs in the top 40, and usual there will be 3 or 4 who have this many, meaning maybe only 25-30 artists or less represented. Before the digital era an act having 2 songs was fairly uncommon and 3 extremely rare (I can't actually ever remember that, I'm just covering myself l.) I also think that record companies also are loving the singer-songwriter, or rap artist, because it's just one person with little to no kit needed, compared to bands.
RonnieTodger Posted 25 September 2019 Posted 25 September 2019 Night Cafe album is disappointing, most of my favourite tracks failed to make the cut
