Nicolo Barella Posted 14 January 2019 Posted 14 January 2019 https://m.imgur.com/gallery/7TER4ZS We are the fourth best team in the Everton Cup. Not really got an agenda here, just found it interesting.
Beechey Posted 14 January 2019 Posted 14 January 2019 Shows how tight the midtable is. 5 points between the top 5 teams over half way through the season.

It also shows how false our position in the table is. "Why would you want your manager to get sacked, you're 7th!!!" is what we all heard after the Newport game. We could easily be in the bottom half after the Wolves game with Liverpool, Man United and Spurs as our next three games.

After we had played every team in this league once, we were 7th. That's the most fair indication of how our season has gone so far. The only fairer one we're going to get is after the whistle blows on the 38th game. Yes the league is tight - does the fact that for most of the season, 6 points has separated the Top 3 mean that right now Liverpool leading means little? Also worth noting that people were saying we'd be bottom half after City, Chelsea, Cardiff and Everton. The point of this post was really just to look at the effect of the Top 6 on the rest of the league.
Stadt Posted 14 January 2019 Posted 14 January 2019 Stodgy, we don't concede many but don't score enough so it confirms what we already know.

Gamble92 Posted 14 January 2019 Posted 14 January 2019 I get the points everyone says here. We've played everyone so we are rightly where we are. I think theres that feeling that this team could and maybe you could say should be pushing 6th, simply because of the games we should have won at home. In reality, we cant ask any more than 7th and we will still finish near enough there tbh.

If you say that, then you should also say that Man U Should be about 30 points ahead of us and Everton should be 10 points ahead of us. People can't look at us and say we should be here or we should be there and not do that to other teams.

Hmmm, maybe the phrase ‘false position’ isn’t ideal, but I do remember when we were bottom of the league in the great escape season and I thought that we were in a false position then. Playing well and not getting results. I watched the Liverpool game that year with a mate of mine, where they were given a penalty for Wes getting smacked in the face with the ball, and said to him that we’d finish mid-table and were in a false position. (He literally fell of his chair, never seen that before). Anyway, doesn’t really take us anywhere, but I kind of get when people talk about a false position. ?

Mate, than be applied to both sides of the Puel in/out camps...and don’t even think of posting that on the definitely-not-the-politics-or-Brexit thread

I spend enough time in the LCFC specific threads without delving too much elsewhere. That said I've just given you a like for mentioning the Jackson Lamb quintet in the books thread. You're welcome you cock-end

Dames Posted 14 January 2019 Posted 14 January 2019 Just to play devils advocate theoretically since the season hasn’t finished every single team is currently ‘in a false position’ because it is not the final standings with plenty of moves and changes to come. There is however no changing the fact that currently we are 8th and its a good position to be in, with just under half the season to go we are in a position to potentially finish very strongly. On the flip side we can also slide down the table pretty fast as its so tight. I’m hoping its the former but Puel has to take the brakes off and just let them go for it.

So by that logic if we at the bottom of the 5 point gap, you’d say don’t worry, it’s a false position! Doubt it somehow. It seems the glass is always half empty for some, cheer up mate?

But we weren't in a false position then either, we couldn't stop conceding and we couldn't score enough to get points. That only changed when we bought a new player (Huth) and changed formation. If we had carried on as we were without Huth and without the change in formation we'd have likely been relegated.

I'm neither Puel in or out but that is utter bollocks there is no such thing as a false position in the table. Unless there are teams with one or more games in hand. The table doesn't lie you are where you deserve to be no higher no lower.

I mean that we may well be in a decent position in the table as it stands, but we're literally one bad result away from being in the bottom half. People say "BUT YOU'RE 8TH?!?!" which conveniently ignores that we've got a wretched run of fixtures and we're only 5 points clear of 13th. Say the probable events come to fruition, we're not going to pick up many points until the end of February. What then?
