New Signings

Does everybody get that nice little feeling when a new signing is about to be announced?

A bit like a Christmas Present, all nicely wrapped, a really nice feeling of something good going to happen.

You watch You Tube, you see his best bits and you honestly think the world is going to change, this guy is the piece in the jigsaw we are missing and we are going to be invincible.

Might be just me, but I genuinely think when we sign someone it will be a game changer.

You do get some that are the real deal, but then others are very much like a Christmas present you open that end up being a pair of socks.

Here is my initial list:

The ones that I really wanted that ended up being great:

Anthony Knockaert

Alan Young

Cambiasso

The ones that ended up being a pair of socks:

Benalouan

Adrien Silva

The ones that were a great present, but then broke straight away:

Matty Jones

Presents from the neighbour that you were expecting to be crap, but ended up being really good:

Alan Smith

Gary MaCallister

I think the best ones for me are the foreign ones that you have to check You Tube for. The silky foreign names, the Iborra’s,  Silva’s, Benalouan. These to me are the ones that really raise your expectations, and this new guy from Monaco is on the list. What makes it better is posts on here of people saying how amazing they are and what a good signing they will be. I think that these people might have knowledge on them so they must be right, but in reality they probably only know them from FIFA 19. Then when you see we have beaten Everton, West Ham and Newcastle to the signing you feel even better.

Three others to mention, I didn’t get excited about were Mahrez as he was a poor mans Knockaert. Kante was a second choice signing behind some bloke from Villa, and Vardy was some rough arse non leaguer.

How did you not get excited by Mahrez? I watched his grainy YouTube compilations about 500 times before we signed him. Knew he would be special based off his haircut.

The Cambiasso one was the best because the thread on here was amazing.

Yep I get those feelings too! I think we all do, which is why we all speculate so much on these forums. Especially with our club, we have a record of complete unknowns turning out to be literally world class players (Kante) or high profile players being flops (Silva, Slimani, Beckford, Mills). And of course we all hope that a new signing will be "the one" that takes us to the next level or become our new hero.

By OP's Christmas present definition.....

- Wes was a pair of socks from the neighbours that turned out to have magical powers allowing you to fly to another planet

- Huth was a pair of old-fashioned underpants that mysteriously gave you a 12-inch erection and 18 months of stamina.

The answer to the OP? Is NO. That's why I tend to give players more than 5 minutes before they are shite. Not many will actually change that much at our level. Yes Mahrez did but now he's taken that step up he hardly plays.

Silva is like the present that arrives late (between BoxingDay and New YearVia a dodgy courier company ) without the batteries . You spend 2 weeks looking for the elusive special lithium number ,can’t find one ,  get fed up , throw it in the cupboard and forget about it

Silva is the present that your Dad doesn't let you play with and gives no reason why...

"The present that was advertised everywhere and the must have but once got realised really quickly was hugely over-rated and a bit crap so gave it to my annoying brother"

Hossein Kaebi will forever be the biggest catfish signing in LCFC history. Looked great in that Youtube clip against Figo but as Joey Barton once put it 'Catpiss in reality'. The excitement when he signed was unreal as well.

In the case of Musa we got socks, but then we were unexpectedly able to return them and get the money for them!  :D

....So we went straight out and spent the full amount on some more socks (Ghezzal).

Christmas day present? - I was really excited by the Marcin Wasilewski signing for some reason. Just had a feeling the bloke would be the missing link for us in the championship. I always think his signing was the start of this incredible period in our recent history.

Broken present? - Too many to name! But going back into the late '70's, I remember getting very excited by the signing of Roger Davies, thinking he would save us from relegation.  What a poor signing he turned out to be!

Shows how difficult it is as a fan, so think how much harder it would be to be a manager!

Nightmare presents? - Pleat, Megson, McLintock, Taylor, Allen, Levine. Ye gods....we've had some dreadful managers!
