Aus Fox Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 A friendly is a game organised by clubs themselves to get some game time into players. This is a competition organised by the FA, which you have to qualify for, 100% a competitive game. Therefor goals scored and appearances count!
smr Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 Seriously tho... the club have said they dont include it as a competitive game. So its a no.
Hammo Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 I was at Wembley for that game and the deafening roar when Jamie scored will stay with me forever. You don't get a crowd reaction like that in a 'glorified friendly'. So a big YES from me.
TonyN11 Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 It's also a YES from Stevie Whitworth! (1971) Otherwise too much of a gap between 1964 and 1997
fazzyfox Posted 10 March 2019 Posted 10 March 2019 It's a funny one, if you win say the F.A.Cup and then the Charity Shield 1-0 and nothing else in your history it seems very odd that the scorer on the day you won one of your two trophies is not noted in the record books. On the other hand I don't give a fig whether Drogba, Rooney and Henry scored 2,3 or 5 charity shield goals in their career - it comes down to significance for me and obviously that's never going to get factored in to any rule book! Another factor could be that whilst you do qualify for the match through the previous seasons success ie it's not invitational, only two teams get the opportunity to participate and have the opportunity of racking up goals in it as opposed to all the other clubs players who don't. If you see it as a super cup like a further stage then that's no different to saying "So and so player didn't have a fair chance of matching Thierry Henrys career goals record because he played for a s****er team who never went far in the cups so had less opportunities to score goals...." which would be a nonsense. Out of interest, do red cards etc in Charity Shield games carry over to domestic games?

Dom_official6 Posted 10 March 2019 Posted 10 March 2019 No cos it's still technically Pre-Season and Pre-Season goals are not counted.

Also, the Charity Shield is one of the few trophies we've won We've won every domestic trophy (apart from the FA Cup, obviously). One of which 7 times (joint record with Man City) and another 3 times.
CosbehFox Posted 10 March 2019 Posted 10 March 2019 6 subs, so it’s not competitive. Its played to the same rules as the Premier League Asia Trophy

I don't really see winning the second tier as a 'trophy', although you can argue it was in 2014 as we won the football league. Our trophy count is surely 1 x League, 3 x League Cup and 1 Charity Shield.

gerrytaggart Posted 11 March 2019 Posted 11 March 2019 Were the two teams competing in a competative manner?
Crazy Kop Corner Posted 11 March 2019 Posted 11 March 2019 We definitely celebrated like it meant something.
TiffToff88 Posted 12 March 2019 Posted 12 March 2019 I wonder if Jamie Vardy counts it as a competitive goal? I doubt that scoring a goal in a match at Wembley, against Manchester United, infront of 90,000 people, for a trophy is something he'll pass off as an insignificant pre-season friendly goal
Fox In The Box 90 Posted 12 March 2019 Posted 12 March 2019 I think its more important than people give it credit for. When involved in it i never would want the feeling of getting the season off to a "losing start" in a "final" plus it puts the league and cup winners together so its a big occasion. Obviously if you lose its less important though youd say The thread is about goals so yes, the goals count IMO
