ealingfox Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 Weird one, but just wanted to see what the general opinion was.
ealingfox Posted 9 March 2019 Author Posted 9 March 2019 Yeah it's a real grey area. I wouldn't call it a friendly and technically there's a 'trophy' on offer, but it's not a proper match is it?
bovril Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 Yes. Why would it not be? Also, the Charity Shield is one of the few trophies we've won
Countryfox Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 Not a friendly, competitive and massively supported ... plus there’s a big shiny shield to play for and the bragging rights. Goals scored in it have got to count imo.
Nalis Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 It counts, people acting as if its the international Champions Cup or something ffs.
Mint23 Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 I can’t see how it counts when you’re also able to make as many subs as you want, it’s basically a glorified friendly
Bezzanator89 Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 See, this should be a poll! But it's a no from me.
yorkie1999 Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 I would, it proves that your a champion of something from the previous season
funkyrobot Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 Yes it is. The Charity Shield is classed as a competitive match, not a friendly so yes it’s a legit goal whether you like it or not.

Matt Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 Glorified friendly so it's a no from me. It was a good day out in the sun at Wembley and if we'd have won i'd have a different opinion of course
Jattdogg Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 Its a giant no from me. But 100 or 101 who cares vardy is the man!
Countryfox Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 I think the attendance at a friendly and the attendance at the CS says it all really ..
PhillippaT Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 AFAIK all 'Super Cup' matches are considered competitive elsewhere, so our equivalent (the Charity Shield) should be too?
Sampson Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 It's 100% not a competitive game. Graham Cross has 599 appearances for Leicester, as every record book will proclaim and he's been asked about why he didn't reach 600 many times (and regularly says it's because Jimmy Bloomfield wouldn't play him and grant him his 600th appearence due to his commitments to Leicestershire CCC). If the charity shield was counted he'd be on 600. The confusion comes in because in most other countries, the game between the league winner and cup game is an official competitive game (i.e. a "super cup") and you can only make the required number of substitutions - this has never been the case in the Charity Shield in England where it's just a traditional friendly and is not a competitive super cup As you can see the rules make it pretty clear on the limits of the rules of substitutions in official competitions being 3: Whereas both teams used 6 in the Charity Shield match (and I'm pretty sure were allowed a 7th): Compare this to the Spanish super cup this year, which is a competitive match: Ergo - the Charity Shield is 100% not a competitive match and Vardy has 100 goals for us, not 101 and Graham Cross has 599 appearances for us and not 600.
