At least by bowling first we won't feel doomed after half and hour. Must be good looking batting pitch if the Aussies are choosing to bat, you'd think naturally they'd want to pressure on England straight away.

Surprised to see Peter Siddle in there but he knows how to take wickets in England and given how much we struggled against the Irish seamers it might be a clever selection.

Is bowling in a test really so different to bowling in an ODI that you'd drop the top wicket taker at the world cup just gone, on these pitches?

I think the main reason for this test is that we're playing at Woakes' home ground so he always bowls well here.  Also Archer has been suffering from a side strain so it gives him another week to rest.  I think we'll see him back in the second test especially if we lose.  It's quite a brave decision though after the World Cup.

Generally though there is quite a difference in particular in the way batsmen play.  In an ODI batsmen are under pressure to put on a score and bat aggressively whereas in test match it's slow and steady wins the race so a lot of balls are left or blocked.  It's down to the bowlers to "work" the batsmen and force them into a mistake - it's why you've got Anderson playing test match but not ODI.

The ball for one is a factor. It's also the continuous rhythm of bowling spells - potentially 20 overs in a single day, even in an extreme 30 overs. Throw in an injury too.

He's the Aussie must suited to English conditions and as been for a number of years.

It's hugely different, early in the morning you'll want to bowl a fuller length trying to get some swing, later on when the ball is old you'll probably try and be a more aggressive and a bit shorter if it isn't doing much, the red ball moves more as well. Starc bowls a lot of yorkers in ODIS and there is no point trying to get top batsmen out with those in a Test match when there is no scoring rate pressure.

Then as someone else said, the workload. Starc probably has to bowl 20-25 overs today rather than his maximum of ten and you are bending your back for more effort in this format.
