Izzy Posted 1 August 2019 Posted 1 August 2019 122-8 284-all out Regardless of Smiths brilliance, that's just so England
EastAnglianFox Posted 1 August 2019 Posted 1 August 2019 Two overs to see out...calling it now, we will lose 1 before the close ?
AKCJ Posted 1 August 2019 Posted 1 August 2019 These two walking out as slow as possible. Doesn't exude confidence, does it?

Izzy Posted 1 August 2019 Posted 1 August 2019 And breathe... If today reflects the rest of the series, we're in for a real treat
TheSomersetFox Posted 1 August 2019 Posted 1 August 2019 Proper cricket. Shame to let such a commanding position slip away but we're still right in the game. Anderson injury the worst part of the day for me. Sure those with day 4 tickets secretly loved that Smith knock too
SAFC1 Posted 1 August 2019 Posted 1 August 2019 Decent day for England but it really could’ve and probably should’ve been an excellent one.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 1 August 2019 Posted 1 August 2019 How the tail batted shows us how completely average their middle order is.
AKCJ Posted 1 August 2019 Posted 1 August 2019 I would say this game is perfectly tied. 280 odd is par.

Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 1 August 2019 Posted 1 August 2019 Delport back to his normal self out for 0
Guest MattP Posted 2 August 2019 Posted 2 August 2019 Smith was tremendous, what an effort. This pitch will be best to bat on today and tomorrow so we've got to make the most of it, don't want to chase over 180 on this days 4/5.

I reckon we’ll get 300 - 330 steady 40’s a piece from the lower order.
EastAnglianFox Posted 2 August 2019 Posted 2 August 2019 We just need somebody in the top order to match Smith test after test. Our middle order has to be better than what they have, so much so that after id fancy Siddle to be their top scorer of the entire series from number 5 down.

I don't think we need anyone to do quite what Smith did. Everyone just needs to pull their weight and make a score. Can't be having Denly come in when we're 3 down for 40 odd runs. If that happens, we're ****ed.
EastAnglianFox Posted 2 August 2019 Posted 2 August 2019 Ahh bugger! No expert at Cricket so was genuinely wondering about the seemingly tough call to pick Roy as an opener in a test match and why he perhaps isnt able to open like in a 1 day game. Is it as simple as saying he just prefers to whack it around the ground as early as possible making him unsuitable for test cricket? Or is there more to it than that?

I personally don’t think he’s got the discipline to be a test opener. He likes to get bat on ball and sometimes you just have to leave it alone and offer no shot. The Red ball tends to swing and do a bit more off the pitch too which is also different to ODI cricket. Test openers have to have almost robot like technique, playing the right lines and offering no loose shots, that’s why Strauss and Cook were so good - ****ing boring to watch bat and they scored incredibly slowly, but their technique was rock solid, they didn’t flail at anything outside off stump and they waited for the bad balls to score their runs.

Its so important in test cricket to take time out of game but in the right way. You need to occupy the crease for at least 2 days in the first innings but not become of a " block it " mindset which feeds the bowlers energy. We should be rotating the strike by running singles and tire the attack. These are supposedly (in part) World Champions and the best in the English game. The game is scheduled for 5 days and looks like lasting nowhere that long. I'm not sure that there are too many obvious alternative choices in County cricket who are making a massive case although Sibley would have been worth a look on his home ground where he has scored prolifically all season.

It's the ball more than anything with him I think Although also a self admitted causal cricket fan EDIT Yeah read above there's more detail
Guest MattP Posted 2 August 2019 Posted 2 August 2019 Roy just doesn't have the technique for red ball cricket, we all knew it as well but we are desperate. Good to see Burns showing some application.
trabuch Posted 2 August 2019 Posted 2 August 2019 That hit the wickets. I'd be fuming if I had bowled that. Bails far too heavy these days - or something. I don't know..
