I feel like we have a tendency to do this with Root as captain. I don’t think he’s 100% to blame as losing Jimmy hasn’t helped but we do tend to let teams off the hook a lot and allow some of the more part time bowlers to Chuck it down to tailenders.

"He's been through a lot over the past year". Oh do fvck off.

They’d still be at it now if they didn’t get caught. Absolutely no doubt about it.

On a positive note, we'd have been pretty happy to have them all out for under 300 before play today.

True, but considering the position we were in it's difficult to feel happy

Not convinced that'll happen at this rate...

Root not the most convincing captain is he

Nope. The problem is there are a complete lack of alternatives.

I get everyone's frustration fair play but sometimes don't you just have to put your hand up and go, yeah, I mean, this guys amazing.

It's like when Ronaldo skins half your team and sticks it top bins. He's someone should have tackled him and someone should have closed him down but it's ****ing Ronaldo.

Smiths on that level, isn't he surely?

Today is like being 3 nil up at half time and then seeing Ronny score a second half hat trick against you though. Sometimes players are just too good but it's still a very good position that's slipped away from us. Can't help but be frustrated.

Not too much blame laid at the bowlers feet from me though. Really struggled trying to carry Jimmy's work load in the second half of the day.

I don't think anyone's doubting his ability or what he's done today, but when you give up on trying to get him out you hand all of the mental advantage to him. He no longer needs to really put thought into protecting Lyon, and can just manage the game accordingly. He's going to keep going for his shots because he's already got his team out of jail, so he won't mind the risk of it - especially when he'll be seeing it like a football. As far as he's concerned, if he's not out overnight it's a bonus, if he gets out trying to add bonus runs then at least their bowlers get a go at us tonight. It's win-win for him at present.

I can see smith scoring well over 550 runs this series.

Edit: if not more!!

And now we're deciding not to try the new ball against him because we'd rather use it against a number 11 who's barely getting the strike. Brilliant.
