Tough one for a captain really, imagine what will be said if Aussies come.out and smash them comfortably. Unlikely probably but cannot risk being 2-0 down.

It's a big ask to go at 5 an over in a Test match without your best batsman.

If the Aussies chase this down fair play would be one of the greatest run chases ever, no power plays, no fielding restrictions, no leg side wides 244 in less than 50 overs is a very big ask.

That's an attainable total. If two Aussies get in then they they can get the runs, and if they lose a few they have the ability to go defensive.  I hope Root doesn't get to regret the declaration.

There's no way Aus will be able to chase this, England can just put almost everyone on the boundary and bowl wide outside legstump if needs be.

 

If by some miracle they somehow do, then anyone who criticises Root for the declaration decision afterwards is being monumentally harsh.
