Iconic wall painted over with grey paint

Recommended Posts

If anyone else wants a bit of cheering up, the new painting will also pay respects/honour Vichai, too.

Swings and roundabouts, really. Yes the original is lost and it probably feels bad due to the sentimentality of it all, but perhaps now something directly in the City Centre (where I think the plans are scheduled for?) can be seen by many more people, appreciated more and now Vichai can be honoured along with the players too in the same place.

In the art world originals are the most valuable. The new one - wherever they put it - won't have the same impact.

Honestly, who cares what the art world thinks? Original/Recreation/Updated version all showcase the same thing, all have the same meaning behind them. Just because it's not the exact mural that was originally created (which was only ever expected to be temporary) doesn't mean it's less impactful or less 'valuable', whatever that even means for a free public art installation.

If anything, being moved to a more prominent location where more people will see it makes it more impactful, not less. Especially as the revised version is set to include an additional tribute to Vichai.

If you say so.

I feel differently.

Don't feel too bad... he's getting paid £10-£15k to re-do it somewhere else and made a career from doing it. He's laughing.

Would rather have kept the original and the history/emotion that came with it than a new artificial mural.

The building’s new owner, Leicester city fan and property developer Stephen Levy, said the mural has to go under his plans to create a new shop and 12 flats.

He said he was considering one of two potential new sites, in a more prominent location than its current home in quiet Kate Street.

He and Mark’s Electrical owner Mark Smithson have agreed to pay Mr Wilson £10,000 plus costs to repeat his labour of love.

Mr Levy said: “We have to move it because it just won’t fit in with what we are going to do here.

“The plan is to get the original artist to come down and repaint it and we’re just trying to sign off a new site in the town for it.

“One is close to the city centre and the other option is on a prominent route into the city.

“I used to share a box at Leicester City with Mark Smithson so I care about this, and Mark is happy as long as he sees it go back up somewhere.

“We intend to put Vichai on it as well, along with the same players in the same order.

“We feel sad, but it’s something that will be in a more prominent position. Once the owners of the right site are happy with our plan we hope to get on with it in the next couple of weeks.”
