Some of the stuff Tanner posts on twitter is just like a pornstars posts. Teases you but you have to pay 10 quid a month for the full whack. Bad move imo, looks tacky.

Some of the headlines have sounded that there could be a good article but I'm loathe to pay a full year subscription to discovered the content is the same quality as the one's in the mercury.

I signed up for this today, and it was £30 for 13 months, which seemed reasonable on the basis of the excellent content they have dumped on there so far (the piece on the transfer market was fascinating) - but let's see how it goes. Looks like its more expensive if you try to purchase directly through the app though.

yeah signed up - the article regards the Maguire transfer deal is already far more detailed than we've been privy to so far.

Are you guys considering it value for money? Articles of actual detail and informative?

The Athletic's whole aim seems to be to want to offer something you can't get anywhere else, not clickbaity transfer rumour crap and shite abut Rebekah Vardy. I think that's what's attracted a lot of journalists to it, the fact they can take their time to put stuff together and do proper exclusive journalism (guess the rumoured salaries being offered helped too mind).

the athletic may not be perfect but it is a million miles better than the mercury; shame the merc has descended into what it is now

I believe the word "Soccer" was first used in public school when the team sheets were posted onto the school notice board. The predominate winter sports being Rugby & Association football.

Association was shortened to "Assoc" for the purpose of the team sheet & in turn "Soccer" became the preferred term for what everyone else at that time knew as Football.

Apparently it was at Charterhouse school. Rugby became Rugger and "Association" got corrupted into Soccer following the Oxford trait of adding "er(s)" to words: Jonathan Agnew is known as Aggers, for example.

Agree up to a point ... lots of clickbait and ads, mainly on the news pages

However, been impressed with how Jordan Blackwell has stepped up as senior football writer.

He was third behind Tanner and Sharpe a year ago.

My free trial month is still ongoing but have cancelled my renewal for after that. There hasn’t been enough content I’m interested in at the moment for me to justify the current half price offer, much less the full price. Their articles are pretty good, particularly the one on the Maguire transfer, but still not that much better than the stuff behind the Telegraph or Times paywalls.

I gave this up after my free trial as it was an annual subscription offer only but I got an offer the other day which was £20 for the year. For anyone that still has it, how is the content these days?

To help you judge for yourself, this is the content posted on their PL front page from the last couple of days:

Liverpool facing Carabao Cup expulsion threat after concerns over Chirivella eligibility

Manchester United v Arsenal: the Premier League’s lost rivalry

The disappearance of Joe Hart

John Polston: My Perfect Player – Hoddle had no pace but he somehow managed to waltz past three players

Lee Bowyer’s career in four parts: from Charlton prodigy to manager (with plenty of drama in between)

‘Everyone was cheering. Not for United but because of the game itself’: the Busby Babes’ 5-4 win against Arsenal

Comment: Why don’t Spurs press like Spurs any more?

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a victim of his versatility and an unfinished Wenger conversion

Inside Chelsea: Cech is back, but what does a ‘technical and performance adviser’ actually do?

World of Football: They draw just 5,300 fans but Famalicao are flying in the face of Portugal’s natural order

Rafa Benitez Q&A: Bielsa’s Leeds, Emery’s challenge at Arsenal, Lampard and Gerrard’s managerial potential

Driven, loved by his team-mates and a dressing room leader, but is Xhaka trying to do too much?

@KingsX thanks. Based on that snippet I can't see myself being interested enough to sign back up. Only article I'd be interest in is the Famalicao one.

They've got a few decent journos signed up though including Honigstein so the Bundesliga should be covered pretty well. Just didn't have enough content for me to roll with it (appreciate it's new in the UK).

With the rest of new journos joined, its improved a lot.

The story about Clough virtually adopting two children from Sunderland is as good as a story by a sports journalist I’ve read in a long time

That story was in the Mail a few years ago

I’ve found the Athletic stunningly good for its coverage of US sports.  I can’t unreservedly recommend it for UK football fans because their PL and Championship coverage is not as deep.  And they rarely break anything earth-shattering, since PL clubs try so hard to give every journo the same quotes at the same time, and little else.

But if you can do it for £20 a year, you’ll likely be glad you did.  If you happen to have an interest in the NFL or NBA, it's a no-brainer.

I took the latest offer - worked out at £20 for the year. Like it so far, although could be the initial novelty factor.

Read the story about Brian Clough which was recomended here and some stuff with Steve Walsh (the scout) about his recruitment at Leicester and working with Pearson.

Hopefully will spend more time reading interesting articles on my phone than scrolling through shite on facebook etc...
