Things Maddison has to do to get in the England team

Barkley plays because he has muscle and pace , Maddison is a totally different player , he is about control and brain . His lightweight frame is always going to need protecting.

Do we think Wilf would get in the England team if he was English? I honestly don't know what Henderson does in any team I have ever watched him in, he is only slightly less boring than Milner.

Our England coaching set up is poor and until there are radical changes at the top we will always be an also ran, semi finals of anything is all we can ever hope for and that's if we get a favourable run to them.

I was thinking about this yesterday as well, although I'd actually still take Milner over Henderson any day!

The midfield trio in this England side is an odd one, we've got a lot of "meh.. what does this guy actually do again?" type players. Take Rice, Hendo and Barkley from last night - none of them are particularly good at breaking up play and aren't "destroyers", none of them can control the tempo of a game, none of them can score many goals, pick a great pass or take a decent set piece. They seem to me to be, for the most part, dull or "safe" all-rounders who don't excel at anything in particular. It'd be interesting to see if Hamza ever gets called up, he is one of the kind of players that I do think England misses, tough-tackling but is dynamic and can keep the ball ticking over too with bundles of energy. Similarly, the other two spots in midfield should be ideally taken by a pass-master (maybe a future Winks?) and then a flair player with a bit more guile who can split the lines (Maddison anyone?!).

The 5-3 win, if anything, demonstrated that Southgate's system is deeply flawed and that setting up with three midfielders who can't control the game is neither safe from a defensive standpoint or promising going forwards. It was the front three who wreaked havoc all game and without them we could have quite easily fallen to defeat. Someone mentioned above about Barkley's physicality in comparison to Maddison's but really Kosovo's relatively diminutive players ran him, Rice and Henderson ragged anyway and so I don't quite see what the difference might've been. Look at the teams in and around us in the FIFA rankings, their midfield trios aren't that physical. Belgium started with a duo of Tielemans and Dedoncker, with De Bruyne and Mertens ahead of them - not exactly the strongest bunch and they turned over Scotland with ease.

Lost me with this example Maguire and Chilwell got in ahead of those you have compared them to because they are better than them. What people cannot grasp is why Maddison did not feature and Ross Barkley did playing the 2 games. Hopefully Southgate had a quiet word and explained why he did not get on otherwise really poor man management and if you don't rate someone or they do not fit into your style of play why waste everybody's time picking them in the first place. |In fairness to Barkley he did get an assist after 35 seconds

Ross Barkley is a traditional center midfielder who does his fair share of tracking back and defending Madison is a number 10 or a winger. England already play With attacking full backs and 2 incredibly attacking wide men in Sancho and Sterling. Not a massive miscarriage of justice to have a more traditional midfield player in that role.

Part of me is annoyed that he STILL hasn't played but on the other hand, what's the rush?

Seriously - there's no need to risk him this early in qualifying. WE know how good he is. If he continues his form and improves still, there's loads of time between now and Euro 2020 for Southgate to fit him into the team.

That should be enough to inspire Maddison, as well as peripheral players like Hamza and Harvey, to continue their progress. It's entirely possible we'll get all of them in the squad for 2020...

Wait until Southgate goes. Clearly isn't a huge fan and is behind a few in the pecking order.

Like with Vardy, I don't think he's what Southgate wants.

I just don't see Southgate going anywhere just yet. I personally think he is a fraud who the English press just love. He has no clue of how to utilize a player who doesn't conform to the ordinary.

Dele is still in if healthy I assume? If Lingard comes back then who loses out?

Personally, and I know many agree that we could do without those two now.

Funny that there was so much talk about a creative force missing from the midfield and we're going to still have that same issue if Madders isn't playing. Although I thought Barkley did okay yesterday.

Too late now Gareth. No chance Vardy agrees to return imo, even under a different manager, especially with a new baby on the way.

I hope both Madders and Ricky realise that playing for us isn’t really what’s hindering their international careers.

I’d have to question that, he’s always been a more offensive number 10, I would say it’s only been his disappointing goal/assists stats mixed with certain managers tactics that has seen him move a bit further back to play as an 8.

I've always felt that Barkley is overrated. He was always played in an attacking role yet for me hes not quick or skilful enough. I thought he might fit in better a little deeper where his strength might be better suited. But I'm scratching my head as to what hes actually done in the past 12 months (or 3 years!) to warrant starting for England. Hes been extremely mediocre.

Southgate's midfield tactics really do consist of 3 strong boys running up and down. Very little guile to open up defences. As others have said, it's very limited and won't work against decent teams.

My heart wants Vardy to return. No Leicester player has made me prouder and it feels like there's unfinished business. Effectively a home Euros for England and should he finish the season as he's started, there will be a clamour for him to come back.

But my head knows that Harry Kane is getting in the team all day long and Vardy will only ever be a "Plan B" for Southgate. If he's only getting fleeting minutes and dead rubber games, then what's the point? I'd rather he stays fit and bangs them in for us!

Vardy with England is done, he's clearly still more than good enough but at his age, sitting on benches touring Europe with no guarantees of getting on is a waste of time.

He's happy being a leading club player and taking the break when it comes. No reason to change it.

Surely with the quality we have in that area lingard doesnt come back in.

I know he’s at United but, he’s been given chance after chance and does nothing of note ever!

If he played for a Southampton, Watford type mid table team he wouldn’t even come up in a conversation, actually not sure if he’d even start when everyone is fit in either of those teams.

I said this before and got a lot of confused faces, so maybe it should be in the unpopular opinions thread, but Henderson is possibly the most underrated footballers I have ever seen.

He does a lot of unseen dirty work, he keeps the game ticking along and has a great head on his shoulders.

He will never be flashy, will never have huge stats and never stand out but he is brilliant at game management.

I personally think he plays in any team in the premier league.

tbh I want more from a cm than someone who merely ‘keeps the game ticking along’, it’s why I never rated mendy really while everyone else raved about him - yeah Henderson’s a decent player but he wouldn’t get in our starting 11 let alone every pl team, I’d take a player who offers something special every now and then like Maddison, or a goal-scoring/combative midfielder any day over a sideways pass retain possession at all costs specialist

If Henderson was here, he’d be one of the first names on the team sheet. The man is a European Cup winning captain.

He gets a lot of stick, but I’d say he has the best football brain in the League. If he played in Spain or Italy he’d be raved about, but in England the simplicity of the game is often ignored- hence why we never win anything!

He would absolutely be my England captain.
