"This increasing habit of demonising opponents, of just yelling and thinking not just that, 'I disagree with someone' but that they are evil or wrong — that creates a dangerous climate."

"We all should agree that women everywhere should be the ones making decisions about their own body.

"It shouldn't be controversial to say that the most intimate, personal health care choices should be made by a woman in consultation with her doctor and not a bunch of mostly male politicians."

....how did the US go from that to the discourse now in ten years?

He has said he was talking about the migrants and not his colleague. Whether that's true or not, and whether it makes it any better, idk...

What happened this time!?!?

Apparently I'm on limited daily posts because and was banned from General chat completely the other week (because someone called me stupid lol), because I cause issues in that thread apparently, but it been closed or deleted numerous time through no involvement of myself. Politics, especially in times like this is an emotive subject. You either accept occasionally there will be crossed words or ban it completely, which I think would be next to impossible.

It’s a shame that some posters feel so strongly that they can’t respect the views of some other posters who aren’t anywhere near their political page. If people aren’t expressing views which are illegal then they shouldn’t be subject to abuse - end of.  I wouldn’t consider anyone I’ve come across on general chat to be beyond constructive engagement.

What should the new politics thread be called?

I'm going with either

The World Affairs Thread

or

Current Unprecedented News Thread

The only drawback with those is that they spell out TWAT and ****

Totally agree to an extent, but in tough times like this, people can often find themselves lashing out, usually in a space where is causes least damage. Also most of the fighting, or insults are a result of trolling, which in a subject people find so emotive its obviously going to illicit strong reaction, I've reacted myself in the past. I've never reacted badly to say, Fazzer7, despite the fact I agree with almost nothing he says.

This is what's happening, sorry but from now on no more politics topics. If it just spans into here then this will be shut down too.

All it does it create friction and argument and it spans into other topics/forums. How often do we read now in non politics topics lefty and righty this and that. I've put up with it for so long under multiple new topics but it's past the point where its worth it now. The damage is likely already been done, and I know a few of you won't be happy, but if you're so desperate to talk politics then I could set up a seperate area where only those have access to, my main intention is that the rest of the site is free of this type of discussion now and those that tend to only participate in it.

It attracts this type of poster or troll account and almost every General chat ban has been a result of politics.

What even happened? I hadn't looked at the thread since yesterday, and didn't sense anything brewing.

It may not even have been too heavy but it’s unfair halving a thread that needs 100% moderation when it’s being used ….

I’m proposing The Potlickers Thread

Or alternatively The Bollock Ticks Thread

Edit: Just seen that there won’t be a new politics thread so the above would have to be for people who lick pots or are prone to ticks on their bollocks

Massive shame that you've had to take that decision but I'd very much like to be involved in such an area if you can make it so.

(Something else that's been on my mind too, if someone gets a ban from the main general chat forum or a temporary suspension from the whole site, could you at least give them access to the Depression thread?)

Is this where we now debate politics ???

It's not allowed now seemingly!!!...

Unbelievable..wtf has happened to this sad world when people can't even air their political views because it upsets someone! (We all know who that is!!!!!).

It’s the right decision

For the 8-10 people on here who can have smart, productive discussions about politics - there are a 100 who resort to arguing, name calling, threats, trolling and just childish behavior.

I find it a bit sad and a little frustrating as the sort of people who enjoy trolling and using 'political debate' as an excuse to be abusive aren't the ones losing out. I completely understand why Mark would make this decision and ultimately it is his decision to make. Politics is for everyone though and everything can be and is political. I hope we can still have a general chat without people playing 'politics police'.

How can it be fixed though?

How can there be meaningful discussion when the majority have no interest in it?
