Our Internationals 2020/21

Recommended Posts

Pleased for Barnes and very surprised. I know he's just come back from injury but Southgate really doesn't like Maddison does he. He can't decide which defenders to pick so he just picks loads of them.

Bound to be a number of withdrawals as usual, Spurs players in particular.

City Stars Called Up For October Internationals
INTERNATIONALS

A host of Leicester City players have been called up by their respective national teams for the latest round of international fixtures.

- Several Leicester City first team players are set to star for their international sides this month
- Harvey Barnes could win his first cap for the England senior team, while James Justin will join up with the Three Lions' Under-21 set-up
- City's Belgium trio Youri Tielemens, Timothy Castagne and Dennis Praet are all in Roberto Martinez's squad
- New Foxes defender Wesley Fofana has been selected in the France Under-21s squad for the first time

Following September's international break, October sees the return of the UEFA Nations League, as well as UEFA EURO 2020 play-offs and friendlies, with up to three games played by national teams in a seven-day period.

Foxes Academy graduate Harvey Barnes received his first call-up to the senior England team, ahead of the Three Lions facing Wales, Belgium and Denmark - all at Wembley Stadium.

The Leicester winger could come up against up to three of his team-mates in the Nations League Group A2 clash with Roberto Martinez's Red Devils on Sunday 11 October (5pm kick-off), with the former Everton manager once again calling up Youri Tielemens, Timothy Castagne and Dennis Praet.

The trio are also in contention to play in Belgium's UEFA Nations League match away to Iceland on Wednesday 14 October (7:45pm kick-off) and in their friendly fixture with Ivory Coast at King Baudouin Stadium on Thursday 8 October (7:45pm kick-off).

Barnes could also face Foxes goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel when Gareth Southgate's side meet Denmark in the UEFA Nations League on Wednesday 14 October (7:45pm kick-off).

Schmeichel may feature in Denmark's fixture with Iceland on Sunday 11 October (7:45pm kick-off) and the friendly with the Faroe Islands four days earlier (5pm kick-off).

Danny Ward may feature against Barnes in Wales' friendly with England on Thursday 8 October (8pm kick-off) after being named in Ryan Giggs' 27-man squad. Wales then meet Republic of Ireland at Aviva Stadium on Sunday 11 October (2pm kick-off) and Bulgaria in Sofia three days later (7:45pm kick-off).

Elsewhere, defender Jonny Evans is back in the Northern Ireland squad for their UEFA EURO 2020 play-off semi-final, following his thigh injury.

He will travel to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday 8 October, before UEFA Nations League fixtures at home to Austria on Sunday 11 October and away to Norway on Wednesday 14 October (all 7:45pm kick-offs).

His central defensive partner, Çağlar Söyüncü, is also joining up with his national side, alongside Cengiz Ünder, as Turkey face Germany in a friendly in Cologne on Wednesday 7 October (7:45pm kick-off), before back-to-back UEFA Nations League home fixtures against Russia on Sunday 11 October (5pm kick-off) and Serbia on Wednesday 14 October (7:45pm kick-off).

Meanwhile, Foxes forward Kelechi Iheanacho has been named in the Nigeria squad that will take on Algeria in Austria on Friday 9 October, before facing Tunisia at the same venue four days later (both 7:30pm kick-offs).

Wilfred Ndidi was named in the Super Eagles' original 25-man squad before an injury picked up in City's win over Burnley forced the midfielder to pull out.

Foxes full-backs James Justin and Luke Thomas have been selected in the England Under-21s and England Under-20s squads respectively.

Justin could face Andorra away on Wednesday 7 October (2pm kick-off) and Turkey at Molineux on Tuesday 13 October (7:30 kick-off) in EURO qualifiers, while Thomas is set to come up against Leicester City Development Squad forward Will Russ in a friendly against Wales Under-19s, also on 13 October (12pm kick-off).

New signing Wesley Fofana has been selected for the France Under-21 squad for the first time ahead of Les Blues playing Liechtenstein Under-21s on Thursday 8 October and Slovakia Under-21s on Monday 12 October in home EURO Qualifiers (both 8pm kick-offs).

Josh Eppiah, currently on loan at Jupiler Pro League side OH Leuven, has been called up to the Belgium Under-21 squad for fixtures against Wales on Friday 9 October (7pm kick-off) and Moldova on Tuesday 13 October (3pm kick-off).

Leicester City Development Squad winger Sidnei Tavares will join up with Portugal Under-20s for a training camp in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

The new round of nations league as well.....

It just doesn't seem necessary. The playoffs for the Euros, yes but apart from that....

Agreed. Not only because of the potential covid implications of teams travelling abroad (yes I know there are 'bubbles') but also because it's a very congested season as it is. Of all the seasons they decide to add in an extra international game they choose this one lol
