Villa post match

Recommended Posts

Its not losing alone that hurts its watching a side that looks like it didnt know 'how' to win the game.

I think the last few years under Puel and Rodgers has shown a different direction for the club in regards to style adopted.

All too often you dont see a side capable of ripping up the tactics sheet and going for something different, die to us not having anything different to offer.

Our midfielders whilst very capable are all too similar at times. Attack wise we have Vardy and then a back up who clearly can only play in a 2.

I miss old days of chasing the late win, balls slung in the box, bodies in there. Throwing caution to the wind, maybe even the centre half playing last 5 in attack to help knock the wall down.

All too tactical nowadays...

Ricardo - out for 6 months

Maddison - out for 4 months

Ndidi - out for 3/4 months

Calgar - out for 4 months

Vardy - out for a month

sold Chillwell

no decent wide forwards and utterly reliant on an ageing (33) Vardy.

plus a europa tour, starting in the Ukraine on Thursday.

it’s a tough ask Rodgers at the moment. Players such as Barnes, Justin, Perez, and Silmani are championship level, not even lower prem level. But that’s what Brendan has been given to work with.

Barnes and Justin are not Championship level

Probably the only City fan that thinks that.

What has Barnes done since coming back from West Brom? 2-3 goals?

he seems to have an innate ability to get in a good position and the shoot directly at the goalkeeper. It’s actually quite remarkable!

he’s no better than Gray, who is crap.

Also, re: losing ‘at home’ against villa and West Ham, without fans, the home advantage is greatly diminished.

the King Power was famous over the past couple of seasons for the noise the fans generated, many commentators reporting that the chair they were sitting on was literally bouncing, happy clappers or not.

His finishing is a problem but that doesn’t make him championship level, his other abilities allow for players like Vardy to get into space because he draws defenders. He scares defenders and beats them easily.. Gray does none of that, gray can’t even get into a good position for a shot... He is young and I’m sure his finishing will only improve.

Well he bought those two players so it's hardly inherting.

He inherited Ricardo/Maddison/Ndidi/Calgar/Vardy with 3 of those signed by the previous manager.

Sure, he’s young and he will improve, but he is not currently first team consistent starter material. He should be an option from the bench.

wide forwards are the most important players for scoring goals in the modern prem, and none of our starting options have the quality required at the present time.

It’s irrelevant that he inherited them, we are missing half (and the better half) of our first team starters, all on significant long term injuries.

You said that's what Brendan has been "given to work with". But two of the "poorer" players - in your opinion - were players he bought in.

This is a bit on Rodgers again. I know we have injuries, but we should always set up to win tactically. We have enough depth in the squad IMO so that we do not look like we have absolutely no idea about how to create a chance or even just crossing it into the box. Some fans quoted the Man City game. Sometimes, we need to adjust to suit the opponent and the players we have. If you throw Slimani in there, you need another striker to play off him. But no, Rodgers take Nachos out. When we are chasing the game or want to win, you do not bring Hamza on for Mendy. If slow possession football does not work, especially with injuries, change it to a more fast paced direct football game which we can be good at. If we have both our CBs in the box, don’t pass all the way back, hit it into the box! If Barnes and Perez were too pedestrian, maybe swap sides - for Barnes maybe even play off Slimani as a second striker. I note by the way Villa is so much better this season and our Shakey happen to now be there as their second in charge. Rodgers is too stubborn with his tactics. The team was obviously not playing fast enough, be it because of personnel or because of Villa tactics. Either way, change our tactics instead of telling them to stick to it and pass back. And by the way, Maddison is not our saviour - he is a good player but not a messiah some fans are making him out to be. His stats summarise this well - someone said 10 assists in 70+ games and considering he takes all freekicks and corners “creative” cannot be associated with him yet. He is quite some way behind Grealish in all key areas - and judging from the game yesterday Grealish is now on a totally different level especially with his very good decision making.

If this is what you're basing your argument on, it is on a highly inaccurate premise.

Ok, he’s also shot the ball directly at the keeper about 30 times and he’s a bit quick.

he has missed more chances to finish and win or draw games than he has enabled Vardy to do similar.

he should be an option on the bench to stretch tired defenders for the last 15 mins if we have aspirations of top 6. Which apparently the club do.

So who would you start instead of Barnes?

Who else in the team is even capable of making himself open so that he can shoot 30 times, apart from Vardy?

I’m saying it’s mismanagement by the club and director of football. It’s not Rodgers fault Barnes is not there yet, but he has no other options. (I suppose Rodgers could try changing tactics every now and then and stop making like for like mid game substitutions :dunno:)

Haha it's been mainly crap at our place the last 3/4 seasons.

Sorry Jim, but I don't think you could be more wrong. It's a very limited view of Barnes you must have.

He's our main player besides Castagne andPraet (at times) to inject any kind of urgency and speed to our attacking game.
His skills as a creator/instigator were already on show last season with his quick give and go's and good eye for his teammates' runs.

His own driving runs with and without the ball are key to our attacking play and the times he gets to show his pace, he's so difficult to defend against.

There's a lot of things he can still improve, like his finishing and technique in general, but if he had those skills honed already, he would likely be playing for a bigger team by now.

Grealish gets away with some snide bits off the ball. Just like when he went at Wilf twice at their place during the league game.

Left a foot in on Fofana first half, went to elbow Castagne when he picked up his yellow (which oddly was the fairest challenge Grealish probably had all night - unlike the absolute rake Praet did on him)!
