ULEZ is an improvement. Air quality has improved to unprecedented levels. This is only bad if you don’t give a shit about public health, especially developing lungs in children.

High St retail is a global issue experienced by all with developing online services…but still one that is misunderstood and exaggerated. Apportioning blame for national and international factors to a local mayor is a bit stiff imo.

And crime?

Gun crime

Under Sadiq Khan, gun crime has soared by 2,500% in just one year,’ claimed Tottenham Conservative Association – several of whose members have stood as Tory candidates in local elections – in a recent post on X. It referred to the scandal as the “Khan crime wave”. The statistic was repeated in a Daily Telegraph article in January.

The figure is shocking – and untrue. It originated in a flawed analysis of Home Office data by the Daily Mail, which later retracted the claim and acknowledged its error.”

So, that leaves you with “a punchable face”, and I’m willing to bet far more people would find the previous mayor’s face far more punchable.

lies, damned lies, and statistics

The refuge of those who prefer anecdotal evidence according with their confirmation bias over facts ;)

Sir Polydore de Keyser, conservative capitalist mayor of London, failed to catch Jack the Ripper.
Tory, Sir Jonathan Lionel Percy Denny was mayor of London and allowed Jack the Stripper to murder six sex workers.

I think that says it all. :D

These people will never concede that they are wrong.

Dare I mention "religion" without going down a rabbit hole?

Total crimes have increased in London from 2016, Johnson's final year, to 2024. Violent crime too. I would imagine now there are also more crimes that go unreported to the police.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/380963/london-crime-rate/ (I know statista is crap but reliable here I think).

So it is factually correct to say "crime has increased in London under Sadiq Khan", although it's not totally his fault obviously.

Anecdotally, it feels like everyone I know has had a phone or a bike stolen. Everyone's local supermarkets seems to be experiencing more shoplifting. Our university sent an email to international students telling them to be careful walking round with their phones out, because so many have been the victim of phone snatching. I doubt you'll find a single Londoner who doesn't think things have got worse, and who has much trust left in the police:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/met-police-neighbourhood-crime-dispatches-b2580025.html

That London is not the worst place in England doesn't really make me feel any better about the situation.

Thanks for your verbose reply.

So do agree with his knighthood then?

Any recommendations for a secret santa gift for my boss who’s a spurs fan?

Struggling to tie down a single idea

These are really good producers of fake books. Excellent for shelves or cabinets that are sitting there empty.

Just get him an empty bottle.

Or, a little trophy. You'll probably need to include a note explaining what it is though lol

Organizing your own mothers funeral is fvckin hard work.

I had no idea how much is involved and all the steps involved.

And looking after my old Dad who doesn't know what day of the week it is and is in absolute turmoil.

Dunno why I'm posting this. Feel like the weight of the world is on my shoulders right now.

And then get a call earlier to say that my uncle (Mums brother) has died today to also add into the mix.

Fvck me. What a week

Sorry to hear mate. Remember after my mum passed how brutal all the f**king admin is along side the horrendous grief you're carrying that feels like I'd been punched.

All the best with it and just know it gets easier as time goes by and you're just left with the happy memories.

I seen something on the cost of this earlier saying if you've got close to 100 to send out, you're actually better off financially by flying to some countries and posting them out from there lol

Jeez it never rains but pours eh Izzy? I hope you are coping as well as can be expected and have some family around to share the burden. What a horrible situation from all angles. Stay strong and continue to vent on here if it helps.

Sorry to hear mate.

Back in 2011 my mums brother-in-law passed away from cancer and then two days later my mum passed of cancer. Was an odd, sad time  no doubt.

No matter how much planning you do (or don't) just take it a day at a time. It's a lot at once but you get through it eventually.

Hope things are kinder to you and your family ASAP.

Much love to you and the family.

They all piled down main road outside work earlier this week. People waving and clapping them. Yet when other sectors strike the same people criticise them. Jokers.

No inheritance tax for passing down farms, can't be bad.

And the dark irony is that the very thing people looking for action on climate are advocating for will also shield the farmers and their very important industry from the very, very nasty effects that they're already starting to feel and complain about.

I'm going to assume this is a genuine rather than rhetorical question from someone out of touch with the UK news cycle, and so the answer is 'yes'.

... if the question might be rephrased then, is the mention or outrage in any way proportionate to similar protests made in the past by other groups?

(Rhetorical question, I have to say, IMO the answer is obviously "no".)
