Piss taking isn't trolling, and you know full well its not. There are jokes and there is actively trying to annoy people.

 

Didn't say people were posting because of a Labour surge and that's OK, I said they posted it to joke, probably about the hypocrisy of it not being posted.

Now you could say I shouldn't let it bother me, but then you could also say it obviously is. Neither of you have answered that question when asked, in fact you actively dodged it. If that was trolling, like you say it is. Then by your own admission you are doing the same, by not explaining the differences of why geoff posting polls is interpreted one way, but others another way.

I was doing that to point out the hypocrisy of you not explaining, Christ . Plus I already explained it a few posts ago. One is joking but not attempting to push people buttons and upset them, the other is knowing doing stuff you know will piss people off.

We all like things differently and that’s ok, it’s a diverse forum with lots of different people.

I just don’t know why certain people are targets for things that others get away with.

I don't think anyone's a target honestly. There are lots of posters with different views who get on, so if one guy is winding people up then maybe there's a reason.

In an attempt to get this thread back on track (or potentially derail it completely), I think I just invented a new word (I looked it up online and doesn't seem to have been used in the context that I used it in)

 

Went to the toilet, dropped the kids off at the pool, took the browns to the superbowl, whatever your preferred phrasing for having a sh*t is... And I flushed it away, it disappeared down the bowl, but came back (something that, as you're about to find out, I later likened to a curved australian stick that comes back when you throw it away). Took 3-4 flushes before it finally properly flushed away.

 

When I eventually went upstairs to the bedroom, my wife asked what took me so long.

 

I apologise and informed her that I had a bit of an incident with...

I apologise if you feel I personally attacked you, but whilst I might have been a bit OTT in it, I'm actually saying I think you're better or should be better than the low level, passive aggressive (as someone else put it) trolling. I mean you are a grown man in his 40s who works for a much maligned broadcaster are you not, so I don't think I said anything untrue, and actually only criticised talksport, which is common opinion on here.

 

I do get the bit between my teeth at times, especially of I think people are trolling. You say yourself I'm known for it, yet you've actively avoided answering a simple question, knowing it annoys me. So in my opinion that is trolling me.

 

Anyway, I never hold grudges after I've crossed words with someone so have a good day.

Anyway, it seems to me that if you’re a Leicester supporter who refers to Keir as Keith the likely reason is 

 

a) you’re not a fan of him and/or labour and so use it as means of emphasising him being rather bland or

b) you think that he might look quite good in tights

Well, if the PoliticsGate post-mortem is still ongoing, I'll have my two million pennies' worth via an analogy....

 

Imagine that a Man City fan starts posting in the Premier League thread. Their contribution is:

- To post PL tables every other day, showing Man City top by miles (spamming and gloating, in other words)

- To insist on their right to call Guardiola "Pep"

- To persistently refer to Brendan Rodgers as "Brent", doing so deliberately because they know that it annoys one or more posters & spreads disharmony (trolling, in other words)

- To persistently refuse to answer polite requests to explain why they insist on using "Brent", as they know this will cause further annoyance to a minority

- To contribute little else in terms of considered opinion, humour or revelations

 

That's pretty much how I see @UpTheLeagueFox's contribution to the deceased Politics Thread.....culminating in a good thread being deleted (though it shouldn't have been IMHO - I'd prefer action against individuals, not threads)

Maybe Geoff makes more worthwhile contributions to football threads? I haven't noticed, as I spend less time there and tend to skim and mainly read posters I already know may have something interesting to say.

 

Some seem to blame @Faceclothfor reacting - and it's a fair point that he'd have been wiser to have ignored the trolling and waited for Geoff to get bored of it. But surely blame mainly attaches to the troll?

FWIW, I always assumed that the "Kieth" thing (presumably copied from Twitter) was meant to imply that Starmer was dull and boring - and that Geoff repeatedly used it and refused to explain it as he knew he was successfully annoying people.

 

Did Geoff post polls every other day last year when Labour was in front? My recollection is that it only started once the Tories were regularly leading - and he conveniently missed the odd one that was better for Labour (few and far between, admittedly!). Correct me if I'm wrong.

 

To be clear, this isn't about political opinions. A number of regular posters are Tory supporters and a few have views that seem well to the right of Geoff's. They express their views, some very coherently - and folk can agree, disagree or ignore.

It's also not about the odd wind-up. Plenty, me included, indulge in the odd wind-up. If Geoff had referred to "Kieth" a couple of times and posted a couple of gloating polls, I'd have laughed along - and would indulge in similar cheek myself. Repeatedly posting the same unfunny shite day after ****ing day because you enjoy annoying people is just tiresome, especially at a time when we're all having a tough time and presumably come to FT for a bit of convivial pleasure.

 

It is also about overall contribution to a thread. MattP was right-wing and sometimes indulged in trolling - but he also posted a lot of interesting and thoughtful contributions from a right-wing perspective. I disagreed with most (not all) of them but they were worth reading. Hell, I know that Moosebreath was on a permanent wind-up, but his contributions were also often worth reading and debating, even if he didn't believe them himself! There was nothing like that to offset Geoff's spamming and trolling.

 

I do wonder, too, if anyone else would've got away with such consistent trolling without Geoff's status as a minor media celebrity? 

 

Anyway, as usual, more gasbag words than the topic probably merits. Shame about the Politics Thread, but I'm sure another purpose-built or ad hoc venue will materialise for such debate, as it always does. Back to the real world for now.

I'd agree with almost all of that - except the tedious repetition element, which you underplay in my view.

 

I'd have found the odd gloating poll and misspelled name amusing, but it lost its appeal by the dozenth occurrence.

 

Anyway, fvck me but there are a lot more important things in life.......roll on lockdown ending, pubs & cinemas opening, summer sun, holidays, maybe even some football glory.

There absolutely is racism, it's shit and it needs to go. We should call people out for it, we shouldn't pussy foot around blatant bigotry and we absolutely shouldn't tolerate abhorrent opinions because we confuse freedom of speech with freedom from consequence.

 

However, the news sources, journalists, football clubs and players currently making a big deal over "online racist abuse" after every single football match currently are displaying a massive lack of awareness of the nature of the Internet. 

 

The more attention you draw to these trolls, the more they do it. That's how it works. By all means prosecute, take action, get them identified, banned from returning to stadiums, delete them from twitter, do whatever you want. But for fvck sakes stop publicising it. 

 

Every time I read an article on the BBC at the moment stating X footballer is angry with online abuse after a match I just sigh, knowing full well its going to happen again and again and again until they stop mentioning it.
