Interesting that an entire demographic - so called 'boomers' - can be vilified. I accept that much is just a wind up or just a cheap criticism of a group of folk that belong to to another generation. However, if posters wrote similar diatribe but instead of 'boomer' wrote such generalisation of Gypsies, Asians, blacks, muslims, jews, women, and so, it would an 'ism' and rightly called out. As far as FT is concerned, posts would be deleated, posters banned - and rightly so.

I'm baffed as to why one age group/generation is fair game.

All the other ism’s you mention have been persecuted. Baby boomers haven’t. Thought that would be obvious as to why they are fair game, what’s to be baffled about

Social conditions were way better for boomers than they were for me. Would happily trade the 'luxury' of modern consumerism for the job and housing market my dad had available to him.

As someone who would just like the chance to earn a living, own a house and maybe raise a family the boomers were the most privileged generation.

Would honestly prefer to cycle to work (my dad didn't but my grandfather did). You could actually do that without being mown down by a boomer in a rangerover heading to collect his rent.

Just sounds like better times. Less management culture too. Could have a cheeky beer during lunch break. No psycho babble wank about 'mindfulness'.

We were actually British and had our own language and culture separate from America.

Modern Britain is just total shit really. Absolutely soulless society. Even football is crap. Can't stand at the football. Can't have a drink. You need to buy a membership to then have a chance to maybe buy a ticket. Boomers could turn up on the day, pay and stand on a terrace.

I don't hate boomers, but many of them seem to think they fought in WW2 (they didn't) and that they had it really hard (they didn't). It's always been popular boomer vote fodder to call young people stupid lazy and entitled so I don't feel that much sympathy. Not really sure anything justifies the name calling either.

This 100%. The mind boggles on their desire to be associated with World War 2. They heard stories from their parents about the war and decided to tell them to Gen Xers and Millennials as if it was their own experience. Bizarre.

‘Ageism is a form of discrimination where people are mistreated based on their age. It is rooted in a lack of knowledge, prejudice, and stereotypes. Despite being a form of discrimination, ageism is often not taken seriously, and it is even considered one of the last socially acceptable prejudices’

Unless all the boomers are a bunch of soppy crybaby snowflakes, there’s nothing wrong with ageism

Every generation can point to hardships they endured compared to previous or following ones.

It seems many on here think that an exception to that however, are those born late 40s to early 70s.

Nonsense.

{Engage 4 Yorkshiremen mode}

Many folk still lived in slums.

Rationing still in place for a few years at the start of that period.

Very few went to university .

Nuclear War was very possible.

Unmarried mums had their children taken at birth - many never seeing them again.

Corporal punshment in schools (I still protest it wasn't me sir. Still got a whack though)

Started work at 15/16. Seems barbaric now.

Schools built with asbestos present and decorated with lead paint.

And so on.

Stop it. 'Boomers' had their (un)fair share too.

Here's my other take. This one far more palatable than a sweeping generalisation against an entire generation... neoliberalism has done far more to undermine British culture and British identity than the increase in immigration.

It always makes me laugh when people refer to Margaret Thatcher as a 'true Conservative'. The policies that she implemented were completely at odds with the concept of conserving community and identity.

Surely the issue is... lets fix this shit now.

The environment, societal ills, lack of money, housing, everything.... Its all down to Ubercapitalism and neo liberalism.

Just tax the fvck out of the rich (lol Musk buying the election, demonstrates how unreal money is), tax the fvck out of corporations, limit all wages to 20 times the lowest earner ina  business.

It can possibly fix itself, if humans behave..

Can't be done because in the neoliberalist politik we live in, its those people yielding the actual power, not politicians.

@BenTheFox has it right. Neoliberalism has destroyed the world for normal people, and yet on it goes, unabated, no matter who's apparently 'In charge'.

But but all the companies will leave and sell their over priced crap to people in other countries who likely earn less lol

Of course ita more complex to this butni do agree fundamentally it's right to earn good cash but the cream is only at the top these days

No but many of the older boomers had parents that were seriously affected by the war and this impacted them albeit indirectly.

Don't worry, cold comfort though it is, if it keeps going the last laugh will be that of the Earth. No one will escape that.

This is my final rant...

I know it's always been there bubbling under surface but the way that conspiracies have now become mainstreamed into Western right-wing politics is very noticeable and frankly terrifying.

The conspiracy theory about the World Economic Forum might be the most insane one to be mainstreamed yet. The idea that the World Economic Forum exists to turn everyone into communists, to turn your children trans and make you eat bugs etc. Is absolute madness. It is purely an organisation for corporations to influence government policy to increase their profits. Corporations trying to influence government policy to increase profits at the expense of anyone has always existed. If you think that's bad and that you have an issue with it, you've actually got an issue with free market capitalism, you just don't realise it.

The fact that enough people buy into them to be able to affect political policy in a way that is almost always overwhelmingly negative is the terrifying part for me.

As a species, we get a handle on our grasp or use of digital information and how it can be misused, or things will go badly. Quickly.

(Well, worse than they are, anyway.)

Why were @Parafox posts deleted?

Offensive, apparently. I must've upset someone :dunno:

Or been a bit too "political".

Or maybe someone didn't get Wordle in less than me?

I thought my posts were quite balanced. I might have used the "T" word against Ben, whoever he is.

This sort of shit surrounding 'The Great Reset', has its roots in the bullshit perpetrated by the same sources over Agenda 2. Yep, that non-binding action plan suggested by the United Nations in respect of sustainable development dating back the Earth Summit (UN Conference on Environment and Development) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, some thirty years ago. Y'know, the one that isn't enforced at all and contains a series of guidelines pertaining to fair trade practices, sustainable energy and urban development (i.e. more efficient zoning), and debt reduction for the developing world. The one that no nation ever has instituted or rigidly adhered to its guidelines.

It's using ridiculous conspiracy theories to disguise something that is itself a legit conspiracy: some of those with power wanting to keep that power and the status quo and will use tools like this to do so, in the name of their own short term self interest, and at the long term cost of at best hundreds of millions of lives and at worst the future of human civilisation itself.

The tinfoil hat wearers going on about the "Great Reset" and such are right to suspect a conspiracy. They're just focused on the wrong group of powermongers and afraid of the wrong kind of outcome; not 1984 dystopia, but Mad Max.

Just been in the local chip shop and the lady in front of me ordered a halloumi burger, pickled egg and some scampi bites.

What sort of order is that. If of refused to serve her. Disgrace

Swap the pickled egg for a pickled onion and it sounds great tbh

Reminds me of this bar in Belfast where the landlord has barred people for ordering cokes. His stance is that they're there to sell Guinness and Whisky. He's been given the title 'The Grumpiest barman in Northern Ireland'.

On a separate note, it all became it little bit less funny when he had to to pay £6,500 to a customer after he said 'I don't serve protestants'.
