Oh that the test cricket was on free to air tv. Currently watching the Hundred which is a bit naff really. My grandson follows London Spirit. As born south of the river of course I prefer the Oval Invincibles.

The first innings was a terrible advert for the tournament to be fair.

If you want to make this entertaining you need good batting tracks. This does not promote exciting cricket.

With a hundred balls, maybe they should limit the amount of batsmen. Encourages players to play properly a bit more rather than full slog.

Frustrating that we've had 25 days of superb cricket locked behind a very high paywall and we're now going to show a mickey mouse competition on freeview.

The ECB and Sky have got to find ways to make test cricket more accessible. Kids are going to grow up thinking the only good thing about cricket is 6s.

Available on no fewer than four channels, including two that don't require sports subscriptions, all at the same time.

I think I know what Sky Cricket subscribers would say if you asked them whether they'd rather have had coverage of one of the One Day Cup games today...

Same here. I think it's a complete myth that mickey mouse cricket gets the youngsters hooked. Is there any data to suggest that the Hundred has done that? It's the highest level of sport, and meaning, that people crave not trivial nonsense.

I remember watching the launch of t20 in 2003 and quickly losing interest. It was the 2005 ashes that got me hooked. I lost a bit of interest in cricket from about 2013 - 2019, but was brought right back in 2019 with the world cup and Ashes.

At least with the T20 Cup/Blast the pathway was logical and the marketing sound: Get pissed at the cricket with your mates > Start enjoying the cricket > Start following that county in other formats > Start following England > Grow older and have kids > Get your kids into cricket.

I know quite a few lads who followed that exact path and it's worked over the course of a couple of decades.

With The Hundred it's: Watch a team who exist three weeks a year in a format played nowhere else in world cricket, if you're lucky enough to live in one of the seven cities where it's played > Forget about cricket for 11 months until it comes back again, if you remember you were into it 11 months ago.

It looked a bit thrown together tonight. It's supposed to be an elite product, but (and I know he is a great county pro) still had 40 year old Wayne Madsen batting in the top 4. I don't think the runs and balls format has ever really worked, especially on TV and I think the players are befuddled by it, suddenly dropped into this 'other' format, as they can't tell what a par score is and what pace they should be scoring at. I do think it works better being there 'live' with all the other bits and pieces going on, rather than a cricket TV event. When I've been to games, it's mostly families (mothers grinning gamely) and after-work crowd on the lash.

I watched the culmintion of the men's game last night and they must have spent 20 minutes talking to Keaton Jennings while the game was going on.

Granted it was a blowout and the Invincibles won by a mile but still. They were just having a casual conversation with him while the game was going on. I'd imagine that new viewers wouldn't know who the **** Keaton Jennings was and would rather have been told about the game.

The Hundred is just appalling. They've tried to make it easier for a casual viewer to understand but watching on TV I have no idea what is going on with the scoreboard. If they wanted to go down the short format route they should've pumped money into T20. There's a reason why no other country has picked up the 100 ball format.

Hundred is just cheap attempt at IPL. Personally much prefer t20. Cricket in England and Wales should be about counties not cities. Dont be surprised if its gone in two years.

There will still be a franchise tournament but I'd be very surprised if it doesn't just morph in to a T20 competition though

Sounds like it's heading that way with the expansion after 2027 or 2028.

Won't be watching any of it, rather watch the one-day cup on YouTube. Might be convinced to engage if it was a proper t20 tournament but genuinely find the scoreboard and format unbearable. Watching it on tv with those crap graphics all over the screen is migraine inducing.

Looks very much like the Hundred will be T20 within two years. Apparently it’s what all the investors want. In particular, the IPL guys

The Hundred was never going to work. The English aren't on board with crappy franchising. We're not American/Indian.

The way the board of the 100 forms in October means the representatives of franchises now outweigh the ECB & counties. They have let the foxes in the chicken pen. The TV companies are supposedly ready to do a new deal which allows T20 while the franchises think they might be able to almost centrally contract players given in one example, one of the ownership groups owns franchises in S.Africa, India, UAE and now England.

Suspect we will see the 9th and 10th teams announced in two to three years. Then it's shut up shop. Counties become second class. Can see a weird subculture of the County Championship gaining stronger support.

It's always been the plan. They just created something to bring in the Franchises.

That investment has already started.

Some of the applications have gone in to change the names to align with the IPL style names (similar to what SA20 and CPL) have done.

Correct. But the new board officially forms on the 1st October 2025 as that's when the two final franchises are sold to private investors.

At the moment those investors involved are minority represented on the 100 board until that date. Hence it's only after that date they can formally make the format changes, the negotiation with TV etc.
