Bear in mind most footballers have an agent and agents are driven by cash.  These agents advise the players and alone can turn their heads.

Because of this its hard to work out what is going through their heads.

One problem would be imagine if you are performing week in and week out, a fans favourite, and you get paid a 1/4 of what the biggest paid player is at the club, so wage variance across a squad can cause players to demand a rise,.

As for moving clubs for money, we see it happen, but often the player is also moving to a club where they more likely to win a trophy and more likely to be get a international squad place.  I do think e.g. the England squad is a breeding ground of tapping up, top club wants a English player, they contact the FA, the player gets picked for England, he gets worked on, and then moves to said club.

Boring thread, same vein as those people saying soldiers should get the same wages as footballers.

If a Subway worker got offered to triple his salary at Burger King, we’d call him a fool for not jumping ship.

I don't really care what footballers earn apart from it does nark me a bit that because of what some of these players earn, I'm being asked to pay over 40 quid to watch 90 minutes of football.

It's the most expensive form of entertainment there is in terms of price per hour, and that's driven by high wages.

When these footballers are kids, they don’t have aspirations of becoming millionaires, they aspire to be footballers, just like the majority of us who didn’t make it.

and why would you have any issue with giving working class kids generational wealth when you probably have an IPhone, Samsung TV, European Car, Etc.?

People don’t stop buying from their favourite International fast food joint because it might fund the CEO a trip to Cancun lol.

Because its ridiculous sickening levels of money

why should I pay for them to live lives like they do while people in the nhs work for a day of their salery

The fact you compared football to fast food buying sums up the issue. its a consumer experience now not a footballer supporter one. how can you identify with a player when they live a life completly opposite to yours.

Any time you make a blanket statement that covers a whole group of individual,

just because they have one thing in common, you are wrong. 100% of the time you are wrong, and I’m sure there is a word for people who do this…

Just some individual examples of modern footballers.

Marcus Rashford - how many kids got a meal because he looked beyond a new swimming pool?

Joe Cole donated thousands to the NHS and set up a charity to fund more equipment.

Pep donated about £1 million quid to help Spanish hospitals where he grew up buy equipment at the heart of the pandemic.

Wilf Zaha opened up his properties for free to NHS staff in London

Andy Roberson funds a food bank in Glasgow

Mo Salah has spent thousands on sewerage across Africa

Many footballers, our own James Maddison, Jermaine Defoe and Sterling all have supported sick kids in their final days and given them great experiences in tough lives.

Juan Mata does a huge amount of charity work.

There are hundreds more examples like this, some publicised and some quietly go about there business.

So yes sir, you are very wrong!

yes some footballers do good things with their money

But it doesnt justify the sickening levels of cash they get paid. at arsenal they charge 1,500 for a season ticket.

I think most fans in this thread accept their just consumers now and not fans thats fair enougth, but it does reveal alot

I think it might reveal a lot about you that you can't identify with people whose lives are different to your own. I also think you might be on shaky ground trying to position yourself as a true fan against all us consumer sellouts when you're the one whose interest in the game seems entirely dependent on how much the people playing it earn.

As others have intimated, I'd be interested to know if you apply the same logic to films, TV, music, radio, shopping and so on.

Well we've won the two trophies in the last 5 years we'd never won in our entire history, the best part of 100 years of which where money hadn't supposedly ruined football and yet we couldn't lay a glove on either. So it ain't all that bad Twister, enjoy it whilst you can.

I doubt a £420 season ticket is contributing much to Vardys 100+k a week.
I also guarantee that Jamie Vardys 100+k a week is contributing more in taxes to fund public services like the NHS than you are contributing.
Why have you just singled out footballers have you got similar threads on Tesco’s message board picking fault with their directors for paying for an all inclusive to the Bahamas whilst Brendan is on the til taking minimum wage home?
Don’t understand people like yours obsession with how much money someone is making, especially with footballers where it is an infinitesimally small number of players earning mega money, for which they have arguably earned it and will be paying a much greater amount in taxes to fund public services that you’ve mentioned

The answer is TAX

TAX THE RICH

In the 70s, the rich paid 90% at the top tax rate... now they pay 45%

Much as I think that the main driver behind the OP is a distaste for greed, and it's just being presented in an incredibly ham-fisted way, I have very little time for virtue-signalling too.

What an absurd thread to presume to know what 4000 odd people (just current PFA members let alone globally) care about.

Ryan Giggs could have played for anybody and probably earned a lot more  but stayed with United all his career while Beckham chased  the money. Kane should not have damaged his standing with the fans in my opinion. Medals are often sold on EBay 10 years down the line. Of course top players should get top pay and  some clubs cannot do that so players will leave rather than undersell themselves. Kane is one of football's highest earners and in the end loyalty to the club that made him will be the thing that stays with him whether they win anything or not. We pay excellent salaries at LCFC these days and yes , we win things. None of our top players has much to grumble about.

You could argue that Giggs didn't have the courage to play anywhere else. At least Beckham tested himself in different leagues and cultures.

Also Ferguson wanted to sell Beckham so he didn't really have the choice of being a one club player.

Ah yes, the seventies, that economic utopia.

I am sure that the best overseas players would be queuing up to pay 90% tax.  You are advocating the best way I can imagine to destroy The Premier League.

So yeah wealth inequality and the system that is accelerating it, with its gatekeepers and stacked odds, is an obscene scam perpetrated on the world by a very, very few.

Amongst the rest of us some do well, some scrape by tolerably, many fall far short of any ethical standard - but all are orders of magnitude behind the richest few.

So far behind that a footballer earning a couple of million a month will draw more ire than those who grab and hold more wealth than a decent person can even imagine.

It's called bread and circuses. Getting annoyed by the footballers is far safer than, I don't know, rejecting late-stage capitalism and working out an alternative...

Just my tuppence's worth, adjusted for inflation

Yeh, who needs doctors, roads, homeless support, increased pensions etc. As long as good footballers play in the premier league

But it doesn't work like that.  The top players (and perhaps doctors for that matter) would go elsewhere, the PL brand would decline and you'd be taxing 90% of not very much.

But it doesnt work like that... other locations offer lower taxes but they still play in the Prem.  If so...at some point they have to be offered tax free options to get them to the prem?

And 90% of those that stay would most likely still be more than the rich pay currently.

Also, the 2020's are quite the utopia too

I'm not sure about that and I'm not sure that homelessness is wholly an economic problem .  From sick man of Europe to thick man of Europe perhaps?
