MarriedaLeicesterGirl Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 I actually think most footballers care about playing the game and even winning trophies. They probably enjoy getting paid money -- and even large amounts of money -- doing it. If I had a career that had an average 10-year lifespan, I'd also try to maximise my lifetime income in the job. Accountants, car salesman, retail clerks all ask for raises and change jobs to maximise income: Why should footballers be different? It is the authorities such as FIFA, UEFA, FA, and even the government that are supposed to be concerned with the greater game, and not just the bottom line. They deserve our anger, not the players (doesn't excuse jerk behavior like ignoring contractual obligations, but there are jerks in all walks of life.) 4

You don’t get invested because the players are millionaires? You do you but that’s why I support the club, which has been around for 137 years and currently in its most successful period in history. Players will come and go. I admire a number of ours, but they ultimately don’t care about us and I don’t care about them!

Plenty won't but you can't tell me the likes of Vardy and Schmeichel haven't developed an affection for the club in the last decade. For all they've done for us, we've given them a platform and a settled place to build a top career. Schmeichel in particular seems like somebody who gets really invested in the club he's at. 8

The club, yes, but I highly highly doubt they give a shit about the fans hanging around the entrance before and after games begging for pictures Long and short of it is it’s the club we should support over players. It’s personally my recipe for maximum enjoyment!
Popular Post Scotch Posted 4 September 2021 Popular Post Posted 4 September 2021 (edited) It's their job. Ofcourse money is their primary motive. Do you go to you're work for the sh!ts and giggles? No. You go to provide yourself and your family with essential and no essential luxuries. Why are they any different? If you don't already, you could go watch non league football where it's a hobby to the players as opposed to their main source of income. Edited 4 September 2021 by Scotch 6
SouthStandUpperTier Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 Of course money is a huge factor for players. But it's not the only consideration for them. If it was, all the best players would be playing in China and the Middle East. But they don't. 4
LCFCbwoi Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 (edited) When these footballers are kids, they don’t have aspirations of becoming millionaires, they aspire to be footballers, just like the majority of us who didn’t make it. and why would you have any issue with giving working class kids generational wealth when you probably have an IPhone, Samsung TV, European Car, Etc.? People don’t stop buying from their favourite International fast food joint because it might fund the CEO a trip to Cancun lol. Edited 4 September 2021 by LCFCbwoi 2
Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 I honestly think that the biggest problem is the various parasites and hangers on who attach themselves to players and have a vested interest in big and recurring transfers. It's no surprise to me that mostly working class lads from modest backrounds go for these insane deals when they have agents, PR people, marketing professionals and sycophants in their ear every day.
The whole world smiles Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 If the footballers and their agents weren't getting their share of the obscene amount of TV money sloshing round the game, it would just mean people like the glazers and Mike Ashley would be getting even richer. More power to them. 3
Wolfox Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 Personally I’d be more anxious about what Bezos earns/ doesn’t pay in tax…. His wealth is obscene Footballers earn a lot of money…maybe too much? American athletes earn a lot more by the way it’s just that their wealth is an easy target…. I’m not justifying it, as it does make me feel a bit queasy… 4
Out Foxed Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 so do most non footballers that's why they sell each other out
Fox92 Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 Players can't win though. Stay at an average club and win fvck all and people take the piss out of them for not winning anything.

My youngest told me he wants to be a footballer so he could earn lots of money - when I started to dig down into this to correct him, he said it was so he could look after me and his mum ……….. 2
An Sionnach Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 Ryan Giggs could have played for anybody and probably earned a lot more but stayed with United all his career while Beckham chased the money. Kane should not have damaged his standing with the fans in my opinion. Medals are often sold on EBay 10 years down the line. Of course top players should get top pay and some clubs cannot do that so players will leave rather than undersell themselves. Kane is one of football's highest earners and in the end loyalty to the club that made him will be the thing that stays with him whether they win anything or not. We pay excellent salaries at LCFC these days and yes , we win things. None of our top players has much to grumble about.
ARM1968 Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 The players are transient commodities - it’s why we’re doing so well. We buy low and sell high. Do you think the club truly care about the players? Most clubs don’t but I think ours probably does to an extent. However, my point is, that if players are treated as transient commodities should we be surprised that they have little to no loyalty these days? Again there are exceptions. Vardy, Kasper and a few others. Like most things in life it’s about climbing up to the top of the tree or as far as you can go. I doubt you or anyone else would turn it down if your boss offered to double your pay. 1
FoxesAreBlue Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 And? Who wouldn’t want to maximise the earnings, particularly when the job is pretty much 24/7 these days. if they’re not playing or training, what are they doing? Rehab/prehab, sitting in the house, travelling to games. it’s not like they’re out on the lash every week is it and as others have said. It’s a short career

Maybe the onus is on you to prove it’s true seeing as you started the thread. Are you invested in watching films and listening to music, seeing as many actors and singers are also millionaires? 5
Popular Post sdb Posted 4 September 2021 Popular Post Posted 4 September 2021 (edited) I'd guess 99% of players would do exactly the same job if they were paid less. I'd personally love a wage cap but I do think they're villainised way too much in comparison to Bezos, Branson et.al, and the dodgy twats who have deliberately profited from covid etc. including elected politicians. That's far more concerning and yet far less of a public debate somehow. Edited 4 September 2021 by sdb 5
Cecchini1976 Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 Players come and go, some will be loved some won’t, but LCFC will always be around and to keep that is all that matters. Don’t care if we are champions league or non league, I will still go every week. and yes players do love money, just like 99.9% of the world, they have no loyalty to any club, just like people would leave their job to another company to do the same job on double the money
