Brizzle Fox Posted 4 September 2021 Posted 4 September 2021 I much preferred the days when players worked down the pit during the week and played simply for the love of the game on a Saturday afternoon I blame Sky. And Jimmy Hill.

Any time you make a blanket statement that covers a whole group of individual, just because they have one thing in common, you are wrong. 100% of the time you are wrong, and I’m sure there is a word for people who do this… Just some individual examples of modern footballers. Marcus Rashford - how many kids got a meal because he looked beyond a new swimming pool? Joe Cole donated thousands to the NHS and set up a charity to fund more equipment. Pep donated about £1 million quid to help Spanish hospitals where he grew up buy equipment at the heart of the pandemic. Wilf Zaha opened up his properties for free to NHS staff in London Andy Roberson funds a food bank in Glasgow Mo Salah has spent thousands on sewerage across Africa Many footballers, our own James Maddison, Jermaine Defoe and Sterling all have supported sick kids in their final days and given them great experiences in tough lives. Juan Mata does a huge amount of charity work. There are hundreds more examples like this, some publicised and some quietly go about there business. So yes sir, you are very wrong! 7 2

If your worry is about funding a millionaires swimming pool, I suspect there are a great many more things in life you should be less invested in. Banking, clothing, coffee, your PC/Mobile that you wrote this on. Most of it ends up in a millionaires back pocket.

You’ve already made your mind up so no point wasting my time , but on a side note Jamie Vardy snubbing Arsenal who offered a shed load more cash but chose to stay at Leicester would say other ways . 1

TheSomersetFox Posted 5 September 2021 Posted 5 September 2021 I don't get invested in films anymore, the actors are on too much money
Aus Fox Posted 5 September 2021 Posted 5 September 2021 I don’t visit the doctor when I’m sick any more, they get paid way too much money and I just can’t relate to them. 1

Ineffective thinking, fella. It will drive you nuts. Try changing it to something like …….. I love following my team and seeing them enjoy unprecedented success. It also makes me happy that the cost of that is a few of my pounds that goes to pay the wages of local community members who wash the kit, cook meals, clean the stadium, do some landscaping and wash dishes. Enjoy the game again, now. You’re welcome. 👍 1
Guest Col city fan Posted 5 September 2021 Posted 5 September 2021 I always answer this subject with ‘wouldn’t you do the same thing’? How many people on here if they were born with the ability to play top flight football (and then worked hard to maximise that ability) wouldn’t go in search of the big dollar? The issue isn’t the players, it’s the game. When a top young player’s first contract is 50k a week the game has gone insane. But we know that already. Nothing new here

Vlad the Fox Posted 5 September 2021 Posted 5 September 2021 It’s a lazy generalisation. I personally think that most players love playing and care about the club and the fans they are currently playing for. I also think think that they want to earn as much as possible, nothing wrong in that, but that doesn’t mean they care any less. Look a bit deeper and you’ll find many many players do plenty in the community and for charity. Plus if clubs aren’t giving them these massive wages where else is it going? Owners pockets? Sure American owners of the greedy six will be all over that. 1
Wymsey Posted 5 September 2021 Posted 5 September 2021 You never know, some players could be/have been donating a tiny percentage of their wages to charity.

Haven't we all changed jobs for a greater challenge and more money? A football career is a short one, why wouldn't you maximise what you can earn and want to play for the best teams?

Kane should not have damaged his standing with the fans in my opinion. Medals are often sold on EBay 10 years down the line. Of course top players should get top pay and some clubs cannot do that so players will leave rather than undersell themselves. Kane is one of football's highest earners and in the end loyalty to the club that made him will be the thing that stays with him whether they win anything or not. We pay excellent salaries at LCFC these days and yes , we win things. None of our top players has much to grumble about. Actually Beckham's relationship with Fergie broke down and he was out the door like so many before him, Staam, Van Nistelrooy and later Roy Keane. I believe that players start out with a love of the game, I don't think that they would make it to the top without a fierce drive to achieve and why shouldn't they be rewarded for being in the top 1% of their field? However, the numbers involved these days do make me a little uneasy. My gf's brother makes display stands for high end retailers like Richard Mille for displaying the most ghastly diamond encrusted phones and watches that cost hundreds of thousands. Guess who predominantly buys them? To me, that level of wealth, where somebody has so much money that they don't know what to with it beyond buying six figure baubles, makes me uncomfortable. The potential for philanthropy is enormous. To leave a bigger legacy than even the most decorated of players could create in football alone and once you enter the realms of the super rich I think that it becomes an obligation. Who's to say that many don't already discreetly do great things of course? Edited 6 September 2021 by murphy

He's still a superb striker and goalscorer. People take the piss out of Gerrard for not winning a league title, Shearer for not winning anything aside from a league title, but both players were very loyal to the clubs they loved and for them, and for Kane also, I suspect playing 400+ games at the club you love is better than going somewhere else to win something. So, yeah, as per my original post players can't win really. Stay and people will take the piss but leave and people will call them for chasing the money. 1

Bert Posted 5 September 2021 Posted 5 September 2021 The money pumped in is to blame but that’s due to the growth of a number of things. People with that sort of money aren’t gonna say “ah I’m not gonna bother getting nice things with all the money I’ve got because twister on foxestalk thinks I don’t care”.
