Following from another thread... What are some of the sayings ya mum said/says?

"Ooh ya bod!"

"I go to the foot of our stairs"

My mums got another one where she calls people with an underbite a “how’s your mam” - because she was once approached by a man in Coalville town centre who she didn’t know, who had an underbite who asked her “how’s ya Mam?”

You couldn’t ****ing write this shit I swear to god.

My Mum's general response to a shocking situation is "oh bugger me".

Makes me cringe every time.

I explained what this meant to my MIL... she was gobsmacked (ooh i wonder what that means?) that she'd said it all her life and never linked the buggery of it lol

Not mum but dad....

He's the kind of bloke that pees through the letter box than knocks the door to see how far it went.

...I never could work out what sort of person that was.

Mum used to describe some people as a "creeping jesus'. Again, I never quite knew what that meant.

She uses this word "mommy" or "mommie" which generally I think means gooey, or stodgy, or perhaps say when some food has begun to break down "it's gone all mommie". I have never found any evidence of this word actually existing in this context.

She also calls the TV remote control a "pisher." I thought it was a colloquialism... Nope.

My Grandad always says "Good lad, Dick" when praising a kid, normally a younger family member. I assumed it was a common phrase until I said it at school once and everybody looked at me as if I was insane.

He's also always used so much cockney rhyming slang despite living in Leicester all his life, barring a brief stint in Scotland.

"You look like a bag a shit tied up rough".

"I'm not as green as cabbage looking"

"You'll be laughing on the other side of your face in a minute".

A couple of my Mum's (she was from Sheffield):

"All finished, all cleared, all in a pig's beard!" (to be said when you'd cleared your dinner plate)

"See thee, Bill, fireworks!" (said while smearing your arm across your face to point at the sky - supposedly covering up the fact that you were wiping your snotty nose on your sleeve )

My Dad had a whole series of one-off sayings he'd heard said by odd individuals growing up in Ireland, which he'd throw into conversation when appropriate.....

- "She has very fine elbows" (if someone was desperately looking for something good to say about someone of little merit)

- "Take no notice of Beasley's evidence" (if someone made a dubious claim - Beasley was a distant cousin who testified in court that the noise of a car crash was so loud that it knocked him out of bed - the quote was said by the judge)

- "Will you have a spud and I know you won't?!" (if someone wanted to appear generous but didn't want to really be generous)

- "I saw Jim Gear with a whole turkey between his knees" (if someone was encouraging envy in others)

- "It's too plumb, I say, too plumb!" (if someone was being over-fussy about something being exactly right)

He also had a good line in rude sayings that amused me as a lad....

"Lads, did any of you ever see Hannah's arse? There's every freckle on it as big as a sixpence!" (said by a bloke notorious for being indiscreet - Hannah was his wife, but DK why he imagined his mates would've seen the freckles on her arse.....)
