As good and as dominant as Peaty has been, swimming doesn't exactly get the juices flowing in terms of excitement does it? Especially when your speciality is the breaststroke (the slowest and most pointless of all the swimming strokes).

I refer you again to the 2006 winner...Zara Tindall.

I guess it's a good thing that we're having a conversation about it. There are loads of people who could have won it, loads more than the pretty poor shortlist the BBC put together.

There have been years when nobody has really achieved anything.

There have been some shocking winners, but it is a public vote I guess.

Greg Rusedski in 1997. Reached a slam final.

David Beckham in 2001. Scoring a goal v Greece.

Michael Owen 1998. Scoring a goal v Argentina.

Ryan Giggs in 2009. Still not sure. Is shagging your sister in law a sport?

Damon Hill in 1994. For not winning the F1 title.

Nigel Mansell 1986. Not winning the F1 title.

IIRC, Giggs won it that year because he'd just made 700 appearances, scored 100 PL goals, and played for 20 years.

It felt more like a lifetime achievement award at the time I thought.

Giggs won ahead of Jenson Button who did win the F1 title.

Would have thought Jenson was popular enough to win..

Must have been a strong Welsh/Man U campaign!

Now that example just shows how stupid the whole concept is.

I still cant believe the Heavyweight  Champion  of the World  didnt even get Top3.

There was a time Britain was  laughing stock at Heavyweight  boxing, now they take it for granted. Embarrassing.

Peaty has to win. He’s the most dominant athlete we’ve ever produced unbeaten in long course breaststroke over a four year period…. He’s also the only British swimmer ever to successfully retain his Olympic title. Comfortable the best swimmer we’ve ever had. The fact he hasn’t been knighted yet and Hamilton has it an utter disgrace. Peaty is the greatest sports person we’ve ever produced, and he hasn’t even gotten started yet.

He has also redefined breaststroke and his 100m long course time is frankly freakish. He’s a monster.

He is untouchable over 100m long course breaststroke… I don’t think as a nation some people realise how good he actually is…..

OK, I'll bite. Could you explain your reasoning behind your Hamilton comment? I mean, why him? Why not a cyclist or a tennis player etc?

I'll give you one good reason why he's not been knighted despite retaining his Olympic title, it happened this year and there hasn't been an honours list announced yet!

Hamilton has 10 years on Peaty and was only knighted in last years honours when he had either equaled or beaten every record in F1. So I think as good as Peaty is you're jumping the gun dishing him out a knighthood just yet.

Also funny how you have an issue with Hamilton, a 7 time world champions and one of if not the best in the history of his sport is knighted, but no issue with Sir Andy Murray, Dame Sarah Storey, Dame Ellen McArthur etc

At the end of the day, whilst the vote is based in sporting achievement, it also helps if you're likeable. The fact that for every person that likes Tyson Fury there's probably two that think he's a massive bellend won't have helped. Plus he wouldn't shut up about not wanted to be part of SPOTY, so maybe even the people who like him didn't vote for him.

Agree. Boxing is rubbish and stupid. So too is motor racing, which is basically just a willy waving contest for mid level IT consultants.

And don’t get me started with swimming! In what other sport do you get to compete in 4 different versions of the same distance?

Imagine:

100m - sprint

100m - backwards running

100m - hopping

100m - crab football style?

No the boxers, the whole structure is not sport. Imagine Man City choosing who they want to defend their prem title against.

I thought this. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean its not a sport. Ridiculous statement. The fitness required for boxing and the technical skill make it one if the hardest sports out there.

Well, to be fair, Tyson Fury was never going to make many hairspray commercials anyway
