Thesis on the impact of VAR on the emotional reactions of European football fans

Hello,

I'm writing a thesis on the impact of the VAR on the emotional reactions of European football fans in order to finalize my master's degree in Physical Education at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium).

I have drawn up a questionnaire for European football fans and contacted several official Leicester supporters groups. Someone advised me to post the form on your forum. That is why I am contacting you.

The aim is to collect as many responses as possible so that statistics and conclusions can be drawn.

Would you be willing to share this questionnaire?

Thank you very much in advance.

I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.

Apart from the cup final, I wish it never existed.

A part of me wishes we had never won it the way we did with VAR playing the part it did.

Our win and VAR are always now linked.

Interesting study. It'd be interesting also to look at how people's reactions to goals have changed now. I find I can't really celebrate a goal like I used to.

Same.

My major gripe with it is the lack of transparency. VAR isn’t the issue for me, the officials are, it just highlights that they’re inconsistent and still referee with bias or how they wish to interpret the rules.

For VAR to work their needs to be more transparency, use VAR like rugby use TMO, there are rules in the game, and the referees are still making the wrong decision, even when seeing the incident back.

Too many inconsistencies with how it is used too, you can have two identical scenarios, one will result in a penalty and the other won’t…. The standard of refereeing in this sport is appalling.

Absolutely no part of me gives a shit lol

He was offside. It's not like it was an incorrect decision.

Exactly, the VAR just added to the sense of amusement.

Good luck with the thesis mate but everything you wanna know is already stated pretty clearly in the various posts entitled VAR.

we even have a poll that was conducted that you’ll find handy statistics wise.

my question is why are the refs in the UK struggling much more with operating VAR correctly and consistently compared to the rest of Europe?

Because the Refs in the UK don't want it as it's an infringement on their authority so they're doing their best to undermine it.

I wouldn't change that VAR moment for the world, chilwell giving it the biggun, the white nationalists thinking they're about to win it all for VAR to unfold

Judging from this weekend's video evidence failing to give penalties and red cards when both were obvious to the naked eye it's a bad joke !

Can't be taken seriously , the football equivalent of imposing lockdowns when the ones in control are flouting all the rules 🙄

Bear in mind though, that many people replied to.the poll in the very early days ... before it was obvious just how shit VAR was.

I don't believe if you repeated thst poll today, you'd get 16% saying they love it and only 35% saying they hate it (with 49% somewhere in the middle).

What an excellent, topical (and contentious) area for study. All the best with this and please do share the results after write up.

Any particular "white nationalists" you were thinking about?   SNP?  Plaid Cymru?  Sinn Fein?

Agreed. What was set up to give as perfect a decision as possible has been made fallible by officials with questionable interference. An example for me being the ruling that a referee's decision should not be overruled unless there's a 'clear and obvious mistake', why? Why does it have to be a clear and obvious mistake, a mistake is a mistake surely, even if it's by a tight margin that a referee in real time would find it difficult to see. It's no disrespect to the referee that he mistakenly missed it, that's the whole point of the exercise. Flawed decisions are now arguably being made because of this, leading to allegations of bias or protecting the referee (fellow colleague), therefore we're no further forward.

It also seems for some referees and certainly linesman to defer or not make a decision at all knowing or believing that VAR will ultimately  intervene. I think it's leading to poorer overall refereeing and a reluctance to take responsibility.

Had there been no VAR, the linesman may well have flagged. Or at least had a different level/focus of attention

Which is absolutely unforgivable for me and why I wouldn't want it even if it was 100% right (which it literally never can be anyway no matter what).

For such a price you have to pay, you really don't get much good from it.

It is a huge price to pay. AC Milan last night was a good example - when it cut to the fans losing their shit my first thought was "wait for VAR", which is depressing.

The only time it hasn't crossed my mind was at the cup final this year. I didn't think "that's not getting disallowed", I didn't even remember VAR was thing. Same for Chilwell's goal, ironically.

Good luck with this hope you get a good few participants. Maybe useful to know how many times your survey has been done by other supporters groups. Imagine Foxestalk will win.

My issue with it is that you still get controversial decisions which still even themselves out over the season. The problem is that poor decisions before VAR evened themselves over the course of a season without spoiling spectacle.
