This isn't a sexist topic but it's one that has been frustrating me for a long time.

Last year in particular, and this seasons preseason games and in particular the community shield played today, I have come to the conclusion that the majority *non sexists of female commentators are driving me from potentially not watching games, whether that be on bbc/sky/bt/espn etc.

Today on ITV it was Karen, who there has been history between fans and pros alike. I'm going to put it out there that I want to listen to commentators I enjoy and up until the last year or so I haven't had a problem.

What I don't like is having commentators placed into my football games that cannot do their job. Karen today was typically awful, she wasn't specific, she didn't call out or explain the sequencing of events during matches and when asked her thoughts on player instances, she muddled through it using phraseology that I'm not used to as a fan and I can only frame it as amateur because it sounds amateur.

We are entering our second season whereby I feel the media are pushing for equality (ex female footballers) over professionalism and enjoyment of the game. One things for sure, if it carries on I'll happily go to every single game home and away just to escape it.

*this isn't about being sexist, it is about the difference in knowledge and football history that the men's game have instilled it vs change being applied and pressured to force conformity in equality.

It would be interesting to get some others thoughts..

I completely agree, I find all of them excruciating and it makes me not want to watch the games. These female commentators are clearly put in these games to tick some sort of equality box and it’s nothing to do with football knowledge. That ex womens pro who’s from leicester was on yesterday and with all due respect she was ****ing awful. It’s just so forced and really annoying.

we’ll have Louie Spence doing a sneak peak of the players taking shower in the next few years

This is tokenism by the TV channels.

When the woman commentators,/ experts are more competent then they may be equal if not better than the male versions.

At the minute so far they are second rate.

Sorry this issue is being forced rather than

a natural inclusion and acceptance.

I’m most in favour of whatever will wind up the most people.

Probably getting Graham Norton would be the best wind up.

Imagine him trying to comment on an FA Cup final.

It's the same argument. The reason women's football was amateur until only the past 4 or 5 years is because of systemic discrimination including women's football being banned at being played at the same level's as men's until the 1970s.

Secondly, since when are male commentators ex-professional players who have a vital understanding of the intricices of the game anyway? Most of the best football jounralists/pundits/commentators never played the game professionally either and there's a glut of terrible pundits who only get jobs as pundits because they were big name players. How does someone's sex matter with regards to this?

You've seen Michael Owen and Rio Ferdinand do punditry, right? So many of the male pundits/commentators are far worse than any female pundits/commentators and only get the job through tokenism, because they're rich, English, ex- players who played for the men's ManUtd or Liverpool side and the men's England side.

Glenn Hoddle

Steve McManaman

Michael Owen

Chris Sutton

Danny Murphy

I could go on.. Where is the thread about them? Karen Carney is no worse than any of them. They are male so they get a free pass at being shit at their job?

This is also achingly on the money.

There's a definite shoehorn of women into the men's game. To the detriment.

Also there's shit male pundits who only get the job because they've been around the scene for long enough. Rio is ****ing toilet. He's skated by on his personal circumstance and time at United.

Owen is terrible. I can't fathom why he gets a job. He was dislikable as a player.

The old Liverpool lot, too. Dinosaurs to a man.

It didn’t sound great today let’s be honest.

but the more practice they have the better they can get and in a 1000 games time our ears will be used to the different pitch of voice.
