Enzo Maresca tells Wout Faes what he must stop doing to become top centre-back
The Leicester City centre-back has been one of the club's most consistent performers this season but can get even better if he takes on board Enzo Maresca's feedback

Wout Faes has the potential to be one of the game’s leading central defenders – but only if he stops switching off, Enzo Maresca has said.

Faes has been one of Leicester City’s regulars this term, with only Harry Winks playing more minutes. His contributions to the defensive effort means City have conceded the fewest goals in the Championship ahead of their fixture with Stoke on Saturday.

Having established himself as a starter for Belgium last season, there was talk in the summer that Faes would need to leave City and the Championship if he was to keep his spot. That’s not proven to be the case, with the 25-year-old still in his country’s 11.

City boss Maresca believes Faes is good enough to play at the top level, but only if he improves his focus. The Italian feels he has the tendency to lose concentration.

“I’ve spoken with Wout many times,” Maresca said at his press conference on Friday. “For me he has the potential to be a big-team central defender. But at the same time he needs to understand that the only way is to always be on the game, to be focused, and every time to give 100 per cent.

“Because you can see there are some moments during the games where he looks a little bit like he’s not present in the game. If he can be able to be focused for 95 minutes, for sure he’s a good central defender. The difference between a top central defender and a good central defender is that they are able to be focused for 95 minutes in the game.”

But Maresca admits there is not much he can do to help keep Faes in the zone for the full match, other than offer him reminders. It’s up to the player himself.

Maresca added: “With these kinds of things, it’s more in the way you are. If you are like this, we can help you to understand, we can tell you many times, but in the end, it’s something you grow inside. It’s something you have inside.

“It’s not so easy to change. For instance, Callum (Doyle) on the other side, he has less quality but he is focused for 95 minutes. So at the end, it balances. It’s not easy to find.”

Interesting the way he's worded that and made a comparison to Doyle. Clever in a way because it's complimentary to both whilst highlighting things they can and need to improve upon without being derogatory. Doyle will have been told he can improve the technical aspects of his game to get to the next level, Faes his focus.

Those Mercury article titles are just the most clickbait gash.

Focus. That's the one thing. Revelation! lol

“Collapsed like house of cards” – Wout Faes explains why Leicester City fell to pieces
By Naveen Ullal - 19th March 2026
Wout Faes

Leicester City’s Wout Faes remains hopeful of completing a permanent move to AS Monaco in the summer.

In the winter market, Leicester City let the centre-back join the Ligue 1 side on loan with an option to buy.

The 27-year-old decided to leave after his personal difficulties and the Championship side’s struggles this season.

Faes joined Leicester City from Stade de Reims in September 2022, when the Foxes were in the Premier League.

The Belgium international played 135 matches for the English club and was a regular until the end of last season. His game time dropped this season and he played 944 minutes from 16 matches.

Martí Cifuentes, who was Leicester City’s manager until January 25th, didn’t utilise him from December. His last Leicester City appearance was in their 3-2 defeat to Sheffield United on November 29th.

This left former FC Augsburg defender Kees Kwakman surprised. Faes joined Monaco on loan and the move worked out as the defender played 749 minutes from nine matches.

Wout Faes explains Leicester City struggles
Het Laatste Nieuws have spoken to the defender about several topics, including the Foxes’ poor run and his own future.

They are 23rd in the table, after a six point deduction for breaching PSR rules, and are two points behind 21st placed West Bromwich Albion.

Faes believes Leicester City’s collapse took place since Enzo Maresca left them for Chelsea after the 2023/24 season. The Italian left the Blues in January. He talked about this when asked ‘what went wrong’ at Leicester City?

“If you look at the standings in the Championship, you can imagine what things are like there at the moment. Since the departure of Maresca, it has collapsed like a house of cards. It is a real shame, because Leicester is and remains a wonderful club, with tremendous potential,” he said.

On losing prominence at the King Power Stadium, Faes explained: “That was indeed new and difficult for me, because before that, I basically always played wherever I was. At the end of last season, it was clear to both sides that our cycle had come to an end after three years and that we could work towards a transfer.

“Logically, I didn’t play in the first weeks of the season, because the coach didn’t want to build a team with a central defender who was, in principle, going to leave.”

“In the summer, several clubs did indeed come forward as interested,. Due to circumstances, no one reached an agreement with Leicester. That meant I was still there in September.

“After that, I started playing again, until I end up on the bench again in November, without really being spoken to.

“To be honest, I think decision was made from above to make it clear that it was better for me to leave in the winter.”

Aims for permanent move to Monaco

Wout Faes

The Leicester City owned player now hopes to leave them permanently for Monaco after this season.

“My contract allows until a week after the end of the season, because otherwise the period in which I could prove myself would be very short. But honestly? That is something I’m not thinking about too much,” he added.

“It would obviously be nice if I could stay, Monaco is a wonderful club. I play, I feel appreciated, but even if that is not the case, I think the six months I have been here will open other doors.”

What next for Belgian defender
Wout Faes already wanted to leave last summer, but a deal never took shape. The Foxes then tried to get rid of him in the winter market. That worked to an extent as he went out on loan.

Therefore, the two parties could part ways permanently, even if Monaco don’t make his stay permanent.

“Several clubs interested” but we still couldn’t get him out of the door (and even then only a loan with an option to buy). Add to the Rudkin masterclass list.

It’s also interesting to hear him openly say that at the end of last season - whilst he still had plenty of time left on his contract - he knew it was time for him to leave the club. How many others have also had that realisation/hope and are sat still playing in our first team whilst longing for a departure?

These are the kind of things that lead to what we’re seeing now: a load of players that have checked out and don’t believe they’ll be here to deal with the consequences of relegation. In actual fact, relegation probably furthers your aim to leave.

How mad is that? That the likes of Winks and Mavididi probably want their next move and know they will get it easier if we drop. Are they really going to give it 100% effort?!

This sums up our position perfectly. The players are disengaged, the team failing to live up to the sum of its parts. The antithesis of our team of a decade ago!

Faes has had that realisation multiple times sadly. Must have been over a year ago when his agent announced he would be leaving.

In many ways our frustration with faes this season is misplaced. He wanted to leave. We wanted him to leave. Yet again the club fluffed that and we end up resenting him and him us. But the villains here are the club that can’t seem to do what is best for the club and in this situation everyone involved. There’s never been a more obvious get a player out a club than faes and yet we drag it out and end up with him hanging around

When has he ever said he resents you? Yes, he expressed his will to leave (which seems to be a mortal sin in the eyes of some so-called fans) yet he literally says "Leicester is and remains a wonderful club, with tremendous potential". Maybe he ended up resenting (some of) the fans, but can you really blame him after all the sh!t he has had thrown at him, especially on this "fansite"?

When has he ever said "he´s to good for/bigger than the club", I keep on reading here regularly?

I think it’ll come out one day that Rudkin is even worse than we think

I think we ought to have a thread dedicated to the Rudkin rap sheet, itemising every f - up under his watch.  I think we'd get 100 pages.

I dont like faes (based on his football more than anything else), but I dont think he is a twat and have never understood it. I remember when he signed being buzzing that someone so obviouslt wanted to join us! What are the actual reasons that he is a twat?

I presume you haven’t watched him play for us? His demeanour is disgusting, his general attitude/arrogance has stunk the gaff out and his celebration v Sheffield Wednesday was absolutely embarrassing.

need I go on?

A situation that we let play out time, and time again.

I can't stand most of these players for their performances but the two clowns are the main reason this keeps playing out. They create circumstances where this becomes inevitable.

But what do you expect when they're narcissists who are never in the wrong in their own eyes.

Arrogance.  Thinks he's too good for us despite two relegations and being just as culpable as the rest of our deadwood.  Even now, at our championship relegation level, he has proven to be not good enough. He would be the last to realise that we are not beneath him.

Keeps trying to move and seemingly baffled that no one wants him.    I get the impression that in his own mind he thinks he's virgil van dijk but in reality he is more Dick van Dyke.

Also his lantern-jawed clown-haired face is just irritating beyond belief and he has certifiable relatives.
