Charles is going to be known as King Charles III.

He's got some people to live up to. Charles I had his head cut off by his own people for plunging England into Civil War and losing. Charles II was the monarchy's most serial shagger who spent a fortune on his mistresses and getting absolutely smashed and he gambled away a fortune.

Surprised he hasn't gone with George VII.

Maybe it’s for the best, I can see the third bit already being ridiculed.

I'm not at all surprised by the 'nice lady but'.......comments and sentiments. Nor by the countless thinly disguised political statements in the so called tributes to Her Majesty.

There are any number of possible short responses to them.

I don't care. Have a public vote amongst the whole Commonwealth,  including the UK and it can simply act as a referendum for all of the countries. Let King Charles III decide if he agrees and he'd have a nice cushy job being sovereign to 20-30 million.

Rest in Peace my Queen. Long live King Charles III.

Did Prince Harry make it there in time?

On BBC's coverage it said he was still on his way to Balmoral and then shortly after the news broke.

Very sad if he and the family didn't make it in time :(

He didn’t even make it before the announcement.

Sad day. Never thought I’d be moved by the death of the queen but have a genuine feeling of sadness. It definitely feels like an end of an era.

I'm certainly no royalist, I don't think the country really needs a monarchy, but I am truly saddened at her passing, even slightly tearful. Her dedication to her country and people was unwavering, and she served her people well. Never again will there be a monarch quite as dedicated to her country and her subjects. Rest well ma'am, you've certainly earned it.

This is a brave thing to tweet out

Don’t agree with this in the slightest but he will probably lose his job and be attacked For it. Which is wrong. Let him have his opinion and walk away.

Regarding succession...pardon the speculation, but I wonder if Charles would be moved to abdicate in favour of William if it meant preserving the stability of the institution and even perhaps the institution itself, because frankly William is much more popular than he is?

It may be that such questions could be asked not too far into the future.

No chance. FA Cup head has wanted this for years

Oh, of course - all of his life has been about this moment.

But if the day comes when it's a choice between stepping aside and a negative referendum on the monarchy itself....

(Not saying that day will ever come, but it is a possibility IMO.)

I think King Charles III will be fine.  He has become a lot more popular in recent years, as had the Queen consort.  I also think we are well used to having an older monarch, and there is a continuity in that.  I don't think William is ready or would want it at this stage.  He has young kids to spend time with.

Of course the journey of commonwealth countries choosing their own heads of state will rightly continue.  Australia might well decide now is the time.

Fair enough. I guess we'll find out in due course.

Kings for the foreseeable then?

indeed.

however it’s worth pointing out that I think a law was changed after a commonwealth nations vote about ten years ago stating the firstborn should now be  first in line to the throne, boy or girl. Of course William and Kate’s firstborn by coincidence happened to be a boy.

Also worth noting King Charles was rather ahead of the game on the sustainability agenda, so some gentle support for that wouldn't go amiss these days.
