Is there a health thread? Please merge if so...thought it might be a worthwhile thread..

As I'm (horrendous thought) well and truly middle aged and becoming aware that I'm hitting all sorts of age markers for increased risks....Anyways,.bought an icle test thing today to test for early signs of blood in piss. Anyone else done this?

also started on supplements; probiotic drink each morning (feels great) and ashwagandha tabs each day too

Avoid the Internet, go to your doctor.

If you've got nothing specific, BUPA and other providers offer health MOTs for peace of mind for not huge amounts of money.

Eat protein and veggies, try and get in some exercise (even walks) daily, don’t smoke, moderate your drink, if you ever have chest pain or feel a bit off in an unfamiliar way for goodness sake go to a&e.

Is anyone aware of the implications or consequences of taking a prescribed anti-inflammatory without food, if it's short term? I've been given one by the Dr, to be taken with food, twice a day. I don't eat until lunchtime, so I am missing any benefit in the morning. Only have 7 days left and wondering if it would be that bad to have in the morning without food? The anti-inflammatory has been accompanied by a gastro resistant tablet, so I'm guessing they aren't good for your guts.

I've done the first 7 days, taking it at lunch and then the evening, noticed no impact from the tablets. Though the morning and evening might be worth trying, if taking without food won't kill me.

Surely its easiest just to force yourself to eat something in the morning for the time being, especially if its only for 7 days... Doesnt have to be a big meal, just a slice of toast would suffice.

How about trying a meal replacement shake? I wouldn't have thought taking them without food would do much good mate but I'm far from an expert.

Someone had mentioned that the milk in a coffee is adequate. Just been doing some googling, the food is what breaks the drug down, so your body metabolizes the medication efficiently. So, you're spot on. I'll stick to lunch in that case.

I would highly recommend a periodic 'well men's health check' arranged through your GP - although these are now much more limited in what they perform and do not include PSA. You can request the latter separately and if you are, as you term it, 'middle aged', it should definitely be something you consider every two or three years.

Not had any issues taking naproxen without food

Taking tablets with food is usually so that they bind with fat and are more effective that way. If you take them on empty would likely just be less effective.

This, and the fact that some pain killers can irritate the stomach lining if there's nothing in the stomach to act as a carrier

Thanks. They don't appear to be doing much to help, so I certainly don't want them to be less effective.

I was taking Naproxen for  about 6 months last year for a joint inflamation issue i have and the main issue my Dr warned about was that they can affect the protective lining of your intestines They didn't give me the gastro resisitant medication to start with and i started having dodgy stomach after a couple of weeks. They then prescribed the gastro resistant meds and reminded me to always take with food and didn't have any issues after that.  i took them with a glass of milk after my meal which seemed to help.

Anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen significantly increase the risk of damage to the lining of the gut, both by direct irritation and also by interfering with the process that regenerates the gut’s protective lining. Eating with them slightly mitigates the risk, but nothing eliminates it. I would try to take them as directed and seek urgent medial advice if any gut symptoms such as pain, heartburn or nausea occur or if you pass any black poo.

They can also cause heart and kidney damage and anything other than short term use needs close medical monitoring.

Been having issues with my knee since Tuesday last week and it’s got to a point where I’m struggling to walk and can’t really bend my leg when I’m walking on it. Really weird pain/feeling/sensation that I’ve struggled to describe but it seems to be taking my twice as long to walk anywhere.

To anyone medically trained on here, will I be wasting my time going to A&E? Just getting a bit fed up of it now and getting a doctors appointment has so far proved a huge struggle

I'd try a pharmacist. Or aren't there walk in Dr's clinics, if you're in the City?

Aside from a First Aid course, I have no medical training but, doesn't sound an A&E job. But then I consider A&E to be for broken bones, lacerated artery or heart attack.

Yep, A&E is for exactly what it says, accidents and emergencies

Unlikely to get much out of A&E other than painkillers. It does sound like you need to see a doctor though, does it feel like it’s going to lock or give way?

Managed to get an appointment at 1 of those emergency walk in centres and they seem to think I’ve torn cartilage in my knee. Prescribed anti inflammatorys and sent me on my way
