Fair Play To Southampton FC

My young lad got hit and pretty shook up by a flare thrown from the Southampton fans at their home game recently. 

He panicked as it fell to his feet and I had to get him out of the way of the toxic smelling and tasting red smoke but, although he never wants to go back to Southampton, he's perfectly fine now and has put it behind him.

 

I wrote to them the day after just to flag the issue up and I have to say they have been really good with the correspondence, updates and apologies.

 

I've just had this, which is the 3rd email I've had, having thought I'd heard the last with a previous email apologising, and have replied showing my appreciation for how they have dealt with the situation.......

 

Dear Ed

 

I hope that you and your son are well and that you managed to get back to see the match against Chelsea at the weekend.

 

I am really sorry to have taken a little time to respond to you, we have been exceptionally busy but I had hoped to provide an update to you before now. Please also accept my apologies to both you and your son for your experience here at St Mary’s during the match against Leicester. What happened is not acceptable and I am sorry that this is something that you both went through and for the impact on your son. If there is any way that we can possibly help to make this up to you both, please let me know and I will see what we can do.

 

In terms of what happened and our processes, we do have searching in place for home areas, especially the areas immediately next to where you were standing. There is something of a limitation on that searching as we ae not able to legally search under-18s entering the stadium without an appropriate adult present. As we have seen that very young people are involved in throwing the flares that landed close to you, this might explain how these devices came to be inside the stadium. This is something that we are looking at ways that we can improve our prevention and detection of pyro devices before they enter the stadium and we have increased measures to improve our controls. These include the introduction of further detection dogs at the home entrances to the stadium and a potential update to our policy on the age that young people can enter the stadium unaccompanied by an appropriate adult. While this will not help your experience from that day, I hope that it will at least show that we do act on feedback that we receive. 

 

I can share with you that we have managed to find the individuals who were involved in throwing the flares and that we have referred those cases to the police. Those individuals will be banned from St Mary’s and will, we assume, go through the proper criminal court process too. We are starting to work through the issues of their behaviour with them and their parents today.

 

I hope that this is helpful in providing an update to you. I am sorry for your experience here at St Mary’s and hope that both you and your son will maintain your passion for supporting Leicester. If you would like to discuss anything about this incident further, please let me know and I will be able to work through with you.

It's a great response, but I really don't like "please do let me know if there's any way we can make this up to you and i'll see what we can do" that shouldn't be put back in your court!

 

Christ, how hard is it to say "Here's £60 to cover the cost of your tickets"

In a previous mail they said, in normal circumstances they would send a load of Southampton FC goodies for him but guessed that might not be appropriate in this case being LCFC fans. 

 

TBH, I'm more than happy with the way they have reacted, dealt and responded to this. I only wanted to flag the issue up with them and never wanted any sort of recompense.

 

Had it burnt or hurt him then I'd have gone for the jugular and drove Vestergard back myself. Hit em where it hurts!

Hi Tim,
 
Thank you so much for your correspondence and efficiency in dealing with this. I have relayed your email to my son who is also very grateful.
 
We are glad the culprits have been identified and are being dealt with by the authorities, hopefully they will see the error of their ways and understand the implications of what might have been had it been more disastrous than it turned out, more by luck than anything else.
 
You mentioned “making things up to us both” would it be possible to please take Vestergaard back? You have no idea how far this will go in making amends, not only to us but to the wider LCFC fan base community. 
 
Joking aside, thank you once again for dealing with this and the excellent way you have corresponded with us at every stage.

Thank you for your reply. It is always disappointing to have these issues occur so we try to be as open as we can in our responses. As I say, I am sorry for what happened to you and your son. We will be making very clear how dangerous their actions were and will be taking that message much wider to our fans because we need to do all we can to avoid a repeat of anything like this.

 

Just so that you are aware I am trying to organise a small gesture via Leicester for your son. It is not right that he falls out of love with the game through the actions of three idiots. Beyond that, if you and him are ever down this way again and would like to attend a match, I would be happy to get you tickets as my guests.

 

Unfortunately, I am not sure there is much I can do to help with Jannick Vestergaard but I do hope that you have a good end to the season!

Great effort from Tim that. Most importantly glad to hear your son is ok, and some absolute cretins looking for TikTok likes haven’t put him off the game. Proper trooper, we need more like him in the world!

Nah. We would have asked for photo ID that the tickets were there’s and then proceeded to ban them from future games.
