This whole thread makes me seriously worried next season. Certainly wouldn't be bouncing straight back, especially when we would have to contend with EFL Financial Fair Play.

The amount of players out of contract, and there will be some that will not want to play in the Championship. This squad will be stripped apart. Can anyone hear the distinct sound of the flapping of vultures' wings yet?

Surely if we make 100m+ on player sales we can spend 50m and with the players we left with we should be a very strong championship side, I think the issues are if we have that stupid yank as manager

They'll be a few surprise players still in the squad because we can't shift them, Watford have a few who might have gone to the Premier League.

I'm hoping we can hold on to Barnes and Daka. Maddison and Iheanacho being the big money sales hopefully. Iheanacho deserves his move, I hope he goes to some team that will play him every week.

Best case scenario

Barnes Daka SOMEBODY

Dewsbury-Hall Hamza Alves/Braybrooke

Kristiansen Souttar Faes Justin?

Iversen

A strong defence and keeper apart right back, strong Championship midfield, and two good attackers.

If relegated we aren't keeping Barnes, Faes, Iheanacho and Daka.

And Soumare can fvck off.

They'll try very hard to keep Daka around because he played by far his best football under Marsch, and he might be amenable for the same reason.

Barnes will be gone for sure, Kelechi is a maybe.

When a team gets relegated there's always one or two players who could've retained their premier league status by moving to another club, but don't, like Muzzy did. Willing to say, yeah, relegation was partly my fault and I'm willing to make amends. I'm sure there's lots of examples of clubs getting relegated and retaining "star" players.

I suspect Barnes might be another such one. I'm not saying he's NOT going to leave, just that it's by no means certain.

I get your point but Barnes isn’t just a run of the mill, average Premier League player. He gets so much stick from large parts of our fan base but he is quality. The numbers he puts up after up there with players in the rich 6 sides.

He could go to any one in the league and be a good signing. Granted to different extents, like Man City would be a squad player due to their quality.

A Newcastle supporting mate of mine is gagging for them to get him when we go down.

Ridiculous thread 🤷‍♂️

Why’s it ridiculous? It’s crap all round at the minute so it’s fun to speculate who the team next season will be!

Iverson

Justin - can’t see him moving with returning from injury

Souttar

Kristiansen

Daka

Stay and be useful in the squad

Thomas

Alves

Braybrooke

Hirst - as backup?

Albrighton

Choudhury - possibly start if in a three alongside KDH and someone more attack minded.

Who I think will definitely go/too good for the championship

Tielemans

Maddison

Barnes

Iheanacho

Probably go abroad

Faes

Praet

Castagne

New sure what will happen with

Vestergard - if we are lucky, a loan that he will take this time covering some or all wages

Ward - similar to above but on the bench behind Iverson if still around

Vardy - real unknown. Wages are a problem but if not would like to see him contribute to the effort

Ricardo - is too good but unsure of other takers given the injury issues.

If Ricardo does stay, I feel that goalkeepers and full backs could be fine as they are.

Definitely need a could of centre backs and central midfielders that have the right traits.

Wingers or wide forwards would be needed from scratch.

Centre forwards, if Daka stays he will score for fun at that level I’m sure. Vardy and Hirst are unknowns so maybe another needed.

I think is what realistically we’re going to be looking at.

Maybe Daka and Faes could stay but I think everyone else will move on.

I dread to think what we'll be left with once the magpies/vultures have circled our corpse.

I genuinely think Southampton will be in better shape to bounce back than we will. They may not lose as many players, so will have a core who have played together for longer and will have Tella back from Burnley, who has proved he can score in the Championship.

They are usually players that have a noticeable connection with the club though, players that put in maximum effort every game, even if they aren't playing to their best.

The only players I see in our squad that fit that criteria are Vardy & maybe KDH.

I know Barnes has the ability,  but he never looks interested. The right offer comes in, he'll be gone.

Surprised everyone think faes is off, no premier league club is buying him, too slow and rash and no doubt his wages will be prohibitive to frnch sides

The thought of Braybrooke and Alves getting a chance is positive, depending on when they are likely back from injury.

Other than its impossible to tell what our team looks like. I imagine some might fail to get the move they want and hang around begrudgingly. Some will leave on loan last-minute.

Championship level players will be desperate to join us though with the Facilities etc.

Will need to basically buy a whole attacking unit off tbe back of Barnes, Castagne, Iheanacho, Daka and Maddison fees which should amount to £110m all in when real value should have been £150m +

Our contract situation basically does the job for us of clearing out a bunch of highee earners, but it also clears out ALL of our good footballers and leaves us with a massive and risky job to do. Wrong manager and we bring in 4 or 5 mistakes which could see us struggle in the championship. The right signings and Iversen Ricardo Justin Souttar Kristiansen Ndidi KDH will look like a solid prem experiences base from which we have rebuilt.......literally could go either way.

i think thats a great championship team tbf and you have got rid of alot of the rot. Im not sure Barnes leaves tbf and i think injury free Ricardo becomes best right winger in championship.

I think he could go back abroad, just like I think Castagne, Preat, Ricardo and Tielemans will.

The level of turbulence heading our way following what is now an inevitable relegation is impossible to predict. There is a huge case for giving the realistic  ‘stayers’ as much game time as possible between now and end of season. Brunt, Thomas (😞😞) etc. because it will be a total fire-sale in June.

Only Souttar, KDH, Albrighton, one of Iversen/Ward are likely to stay. Probably Justin too due to his injury record. Unless we get a surprise bid.

The rest will try their best to leave, some will probably end up staying.

Posted (edited)

Faes will 100% be off. But it could be a curious one where he's loaned out to, say, italy rather than sold, to remove part / all of his wage but with a view to him returning in the (unlikely) event of promotion

On a side note, are we allowed to sign overseas players down there? Surely that level of player won't qualify for work permits
