CHRIS SUTTON: Martin O'Neill reveals that he would have been 'delighted' to have taken the Leicester job, if they had called... and insists that the 'high press' has been around since 1976!

He likes Leicester but he's obviously got more affinity for Notts Forest and Celtic.

MON said the same thing at the recent book signing, about how all these modern buzzwords like high press etc aren't revolutionary at all and he's probably right. The thing that has changed significantly from his glory days is the mindset of modern players and I think that's possibly what would have made it difficult for him to cope with today's game.

If Sadler and Stowell had shown some competence, I could have seen MoN coming in as a motivator and figure head. He was never a coach he was an old school manager. He worked with Robertson as head coach overseeing all the training. It was painfully clear that Sadler and Stowell were part of the problem and not the solution with their clueless spell in charge and we needed coaches and a manager and a complete overhaul. That meant MoN could never really be a consideration.

Why does one of the captions on a photo read "The Northern Irishman had plenty of success with Celtic during his stint there from 1995-2000"    ???????

I think 'Celtic' should read 'Leicester'.   Or the dates are then wrong.

Sutton was bang average on his day, going to Celtic was like a championship player in their prime swapping that, to play in the Isthmian League. If you look back soon as left Celtic came back to England he struggled. Went to both Birmingham and Villa could barely kick a ball.

Such a weirdly written interview, Sutton asks a question, O'Neill answers, then they move onto a completely different point with no elaboration.

CS: You signed me from Chelsea during your time at Celtic

MON: I did, I know sometimes faces don't fit at clubs and you were a very capable striker

CS: Favourite pudding?

Sutton may well be an annoying pundit, but that's not a very balanced summary of his playing career. :D

At Norwich, he scored 25 goals in a PL season and played for a Norwich team that finished 3rd and knocked Bayern out of Europe.

At Blackburn, he was a key player in their PL title-winning side and was joint top scorer in the PL another season - from memory, I'd guess his assists records was pretty good, too.

Whatever the limitations of the Scottish league, he had a successful career at Celtic, an "Isthmian League" side with whom he reached a UEFA Cup (Europa League) final.

I think he's a mediocre pundit (a lot better than Sherwood, but that's not saying much), but judging his playing record in his 30s at Brum/Villa is like slating Kevin Phillips because he didn't score 30 a season at LCFC. lol

Also worth noting Celtic were stronger under O'Neill, than they are now, and reached the Europa League final, only just to lose to Mourinho's great Porto side.

Celtic knocked Liverpool out that season.

I think Sutton's prime was his Blackburn days, not joining Celtic in his late 20's.

Yeah, you might not like Sutton as a pundit, but calling him a “bang average” player is ridiculously harsh. He was a very very good player at Norwich, Blackburn and Celtic.

That Celtic team would murder us.

Scottish football back then wasn't like Scottish football now. Both Rangers and Celtic were fairly competitive in Europe back then, each getting to a final.

Their forward 3 of Larsson, Sutton and Moravcik would tear us to shreds.
