slightly tired period and concentration lapses at the end almost let them back in it but then we got it together. just shows you've got to bury your chances to ensure safety.

Also shows, that two games a week holding manipulating those tight reins & competing with the mental  discipline required…ain’t that easy at this level of sport..

Worst ref I've seen in a long time and that's saying something! Good to grind out a result in the end but could have been very different if they could have finished their chances.

Also potentially very different had we not hit the post twice.

And a third.

Penalty each as well. They had no shots on target 2nd half but it was the amount of opportunities they created that were concerning. First time I'd say we looked tired but we did dig in and saw it through.

Agree totally about a penalty each.  When Vesty got ‘sacked’ in the box, it evened up the Faes incident.

Didn't deserve to win that.

I know we scored and they didn't and a win is a win and we had enough chances to piss it but really uncomfortable watch.

ref was duck shìt but at least he was duck shìt enough to miss their stonewall penlol

I”m very happy that they didn’t score at the start of the 66th minute

I've always thought it would be weird if there was a controversial incident or a goal during the minute's applause. That's why I'm not a fan of the applause at a fixed time.

Casadei had a good game, probably his best in a Leicester shirt and should have scored at least 2. Nacho should have also bagged a couple of goals.

But worried with the number of games JJ, Ricky and Winks are playing though.

I particularly enjoyed the one where he gave Sunderland a free-kick, they took it about 15 yards further up the pitch, he blew his whistle to make them take it from the correct position, before thinking “**** it” and just let them play on … literally the most ludicrous refereeing performance I’ve seen in a long time, or quite possibly ever tbh!

Absolutely this. We were all pissing ourselves. Ref tells them to take it back, they continue passing and he just lets them carry on. Unbelievable. Just had to laugh at the incompetence.

The state of refereeing in this country is woeful. Whenever you watch a major tournament the refs there are far superior

I thought we deserved it despite Sunderland playing well purely on the quality of chances we had. The ref missed 2 stonewall penalties for us (Vesty, Fatawu) and never picked up Ballard and especially O’Nien for blatant grappling and holding more appropriate on a rugby pitch throughout. Numerous times he gesticulated he was giving us the advantage when a freekick would’ve been more advantageous. Add to that that their keeper had almost a 10/10 performance with two saves onto the post and other outstanding saves against Casadei. Mads had a much quieter evening for us with the gloves.

Thought we played alright tonight, it was my first look at Enzoball in the flesh and I couldn’t decide at times wether I liked it or not.

We seemed to come alive in flashes in the final third and should have wrapped the game up in the second half were it not for poor refereeing and a couple of wonder saves from Sunderland’s keeper.

Love Winks, such a classy player and makes us tick. Lord knows what he’s doing in the championship. Iheanacho was garbage and lucky to stay on mocking the referee.

Sunderland were a decent side and were unlucky not to come away with something. On we march!

That wasn't really Enzoball last night. We struggled to keep possession or control the game like we have done previously. There was a lot more long ball stuff under pressure rather than playing out from the back too. Rightly so the way Sunderland were doing the high press.

A good game to watch!

It works both ways. What about the chances we missed? Two games now when we’ve missed some absolute sitters.

Sunderland set up tactically well, dragging our midfield about the place and really causing us issues. Just as we should've scored 4, on another day they grab a couple.

Thing is, I can’t actually remember Mads having to make a proper save? Did they actually create any really clear cut chances? Or were they just causing us problems and not allowing us to get control of the ball?

We deserved to win because we created more clear cut chances.

Sunderland matched us 3 Vs 3 on our goal kicks and pressured well so had an extra man to press. Good tactic and forced us long more times than usual. Was a strange game and our hardest so far but could of easily won 4-0 or drew 2-2.

We actually should have had two. Yes, Vestergaard was pulled to the ground really badly and I think VAR would have given that.

But the worst one is Fatawu. The referee sees the full incident and literally just gets the rules objectively wrong. You can say that they didn't see Vestergaard go down properly but he saw Fatawu and just simply made an extremely amateurish mistake.

The law changed some time ago, it now states (as per the official FA website) -

"If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues holding inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick."

They were shirt pulling all game. Every 1 v 1 Mavididi had they pulled his shirt… same with Kel. They got under our skins a little bit yesterday, but we held firm and still won the game, so their tactics proved fruitless.

Hilarious to see Vestergaard tackling/dispossessing and breaking up play in the opposition's half.

Casadei looking far more commanding in mf made some great runs into the box which is exactly what Enzo expects of him.

Ricardo was superb.

JJ did a great job on the right containing Jack Clarke which many have failed to do this season. Good tactical switch from the manager.

As has been mentioned, Patrick Roberts is a very impressive player.

I agree.

Part of the problem is that the refs today still look back in reverence at the hype created in the mid- to late 2000s and early 2010s, which stated that English refs were the best in the world. It was true to a point, at the time, because the Premier League started doing things with refs that other countries didn't (increased funding and evolving support networks, technical training, performance support, psychological support etc), designed to help the referees improve their on-field performances.

Two things though.

One: the extra training and support is/was available to the Premier League refs. EFL and below – not so much.

Two: other countries have since caught up with their investment in refereeing – if not actually already passed the Prem.

Perhaps the fact that we've fallen behind is that we (or at least those responsible for refereeing) still believe we have the best refs around. Perhaps we need to swallow our pride, have a look at what other countries are doing and try and further develop those support structures.

As for the hilarious uselessness on display last night – a mixture of arrogance and incompetence – Stroud might be an excellent example of this problem. He is well in his 50s and spent a few years in the Prem at exactly the right time. So he might still think he's part of that "best in the world" generation.
