At the risk of taking some flak, I think we have to be really careful when we're criminalising distasteful behaviour as 'hate crime'.

 

The idea of legal protection against being offended is a really tricky area.

 

These pricks are braindead morons and football clubs have the right to individually or collectively refuse to allow them to attend matches. Their actions could have incited violence and are probably a public order offence. 

 

I think the law covers this stuff pretty well without getting into territory where saying something that someone else finds upsetting becomes a hate crime.

Hate crime? I thought hate crime was an additional charge where the crime was motivated by extreme prejudice towards a demographic. Unless the blokes did it because a number of those on board were Thai, I don't see where hate crime comes into it

Personally I don’t think  a greater punishment for them could be sought other than Millwall banning them for a certain number of years.

 

id hate football to be turned into an event where you can’t tell a GK how bad he is after a goal kick, or that Bernie can’t tell Sheffield Wednesday to go away.

in all seriousness, it’s now just how a law starts, it’s how it’s later interpreted and amended.

Not sure the investigating force reporting that the defendants "had no choice but to plead guilty" sits terribly comfortably with me.

 

Calling it a "hate crime" would also seem to trivialise the suffering of the genuine victims of such crimes too.

Next time we play Liverpool, if anyone decides to belt out "feed the scousers" them feckers will definitely be filing hate crime charges. I agree with what people are saying that brain dead morons like these Millwall scummers should just be given banning orders by clubs, shit like this shouldn't be wasting police and court time. Its a slippery slope and it could open up a can of worms where anyone could just bring out the "hate crime" line when something offends them. Do I appreciate other fans doing helicopter chants etc? No. Does it bother me enough to report it to the police and press charges against individuals? Absolutely not.
