Forgotten Leicester City man finally has chance to stake claim before potential summer rebuild
Wanya Marcal is back in action on loan in the Netherlands, and will hope to feature often in a promotion push to show he's ready to be an option at City next term

Wanya Marcal will hope to stake a claim for a return to contention at Leicester City after making his comeback in the Netherlands.

Somewhat of a forgotten man after an injury-hit campaign on loan at De Graafschap, Marcal is now fit again and has played his first two games of 2025 over the past fortnight.

The winger made an impact as a substitute against TOP Oss to help De Graafschap record a fourth straight victory, and it earned him a start in their next outing, against MVV Maastricht. But they could not keep the winning run up, drawing 0-0.

It looks like it will be a tense end to the season in the Dutch second tier.

De Graafschap are currently sixth in the table, five points off the automatic promotion spots and with a cushion of six points inside the play-offs. There are seven games to go in the regular season.

Marcal has only played seven games for his loan club. Injured almost as soon as he arrived in the Netherlands, the Portuguese was back at City's Seagrave base until he regained fitness, the 22-year-old then heading back out for a run of five games in December.

But injured again, he’s only just back fit for a second time. Now, De Graafschap have a new manager in former Brentford boss Marinus Dijkhuizen.

With the prospect of three two-legged ties if De Graafschap end up in the play-offs and make it to the final, there’s still plenty of game-time for Marcal to impress in.

That could be important ahead of the summer, when he will come back into the fold, especially if City drop into the Championship.

Last season under Enzo Maresca, made eight senior City appearances, scoring his first goal for the club against Cardiff and impressing in the FA Cup victory over Bournemouth.

In December 2023, he signed a new contract with City, keeping him at the club until 2026.

City do look well-stocked for wingers in the event of relegation, even if some players end up leaving, and so Marcal will have a battle to show he’s worth a spot in the squad.

They have Stephy Mavididi, Jordan Ayew, Bobby De Cordova-Reid, and Kasey McAteer competing for places now, while Abdul Fatawu will return to fitness in the summer.

Hamzas ball winning abilities in the Championship are elite

It's mad the stick he gets from Sheffield United fans for not being tidy on the ball, the work he does off it for them has been invaluable for them over his recent appearances. He is everywhere for them, just needs to be able to pass it 5 yards when he's got it back.

Just got a standing ovation? My mates waxed lyrical about him since day 1. Not heard much stick if I’m being honest.

Played like Bangladeshi Kante tonight lol

He's one of those very good championship players, but not good enough technically to step-up to the Prem.

There was a thread off of twitter or their forum posted on here not long ago slating him. He was very good tonight!

Genuinely always wondered why we never seemed to let hamza play the role he was always best at. Brendan tried to make him an 8. Enzo made him a rb.

Just let the lad win the ball for you and give it to someone else.

when he played for the England 21s he was so very good and then had that one horror moment… it was a sliding doors moment because he was never fancied to play that defensive role again and it’s always felt like we were using him as a square peg after that.

Im not sure what skipp can do that hamza can’t tbqh

I’ll have hamsa any day over skippy doo.

When we were relegated before, I got pelters from some for suggesting Hamza had a place in the squad but he is showing what a good players he is at that level if used correctly.

We have lacked bite in the middle for a while, Ndidi is never fit. I’d have him in the team next year, there I have said it!

I don’t agree with some of his off the fields decisions and clearly he is another one that has been put on a wage that is inflated for where it should be but that is the case for everybody in the squad.

Contrary to the above I hope we can use a decent loan to finally cash in on Hamza.. He's been in and around the 1st team for 8 years or so and is a very limited footballer on daft money.

Sell with best wishes for me..

And that’s before we mention three questionable incidents on professionalism

I should add to my above post, I am in favour with moving as many on and if there is an offer for Choudhury they gets his wages off the books and pure profit, of course take it.

I do just think purely as his merits as a player, if played to his strengths, he’s very good at what he does at that level and showing it now so if he is still around, play him as he offers more than anyone else we have in that area.

Fully agree with this he’s certainly an enigma, he’s a bit of a Robbie Savage limited ability but offers something more player 🫤

A lot of people slate players that don’t try and he certainly doesn’t fit into that category, he puts himself about, disrupts, energetic, can play a pass, multi positional and can take instruction he’s not the headless chicken he once was.

Vestergaard is let off for his short comings because the manager doesn’t ’play to his strengths’ yet we saw last season how Enzo used Hamza and got a decent tune out of him.

As I say he’s an enigma because fans say he’s not good enough for us talking as if we are a top 10 pushing side then ask for players that will show a bit of grit not like the prima Donna’s currently playing because we need fighters in a relegation or championship battle 🤷‍♂️

That’s not me saying we should keep him but struggle to understand what fans think where the club is currently and what type of players should be in next years squad for what ever league (ok championship) we find ourselves in.

Agreed. As I say, all our squad could have the accusation of being paid above their ability levelled at them. I also don’t like the off the field issues with the drink driving. Absolutely unacceptable.

However, there are many that through their attitude on the pitch, lack of effort etc will just not offer anything next year. I’m talking Coady, Vestergaard and Faes. Probably looking at Soumare in the midfield positions. Ndidi as he will inevitably be out injured for more of the season than he is fit. Choudhury, whilst yes, if there’s a good deal to be had, do it, I think he’d actually contribute well if played in his correct position to his strengths.

Many of our fans are snobs now and just want fancy players with nice bags and fancy hair cuts etc. However, they also complain that our midfield is like a sieve and our defence is hung out to dry (whilst they don’t help themselves). At Championship level, Choudhury as a defensive midfielder, makes us a lot harder to beat and will win the ball back before our defence comes under pressure as much.

Eh? He’s very good at what he does and is turning in some excellent performances for the top of the league side.

It’s like saying Michael Cooper for Sheffield United is not a very good Championship player because he only saves shots and keeps clean sheets but can’t score goals, can’t beat a man to put a cross in or run a midfield lol

Or a less silly example, that Billy Sharp wasn’t a very good Championship player because he only scored goals!

Hamza is good in the Champ. No question. Ball winner but can also play right back.

But. Big but.

Depends on manager in situ. Genuinely think if its not RVN, or even if it is, it might be a reset, new brush sweeps clean situation.

Also - what often gets ignored is what does the player want? Not just HC but others also?

Good comms necessary and a rest required.

He switches off and positionally is very erratic. We slate Soumare for this but Hamza is equally as bad for it and I put it down to attitude as much as anything. Just can't stay disciplined enough for that role even though it evidently suits his skill set.

Hamza is about as much of the answer as Soumare.

Watching Yates covering and plugging gap for Forest tonight compare to these two.

Some and excellent is pushing it . He’s had about two good games . Good not excellent . Their fans had been slating him and also said that is was his best game so far .I watched the game  and yes he had a good game but he was far from  being excellent or stood out .  We also know he’ll have 1 good  game in 10 and is a limited player . Glad he had a good game but he’s needs to be gone .
