I wonder what it is about proponents of this death by passing football that makes them so wedded to it?

I'd imagine precisely that. A manager that can do it well almost bores the opposition to death, and makes them work harder to get the ball back. Tiring them out through their lack of control. It works better against teams that naturally attack or are naturally forward/fast-flowing. Horrible to watch against a strictly organised and efficient team.

Or in Martin's case against PL opposition, works minimally lol

If it's done right, and the element of control is balanced with creating chances frequently, it's fine. But where it comes unstuck is against a team with a low block or small gaps between defence and midfield.

Other managers seem to have a degree of flexibility in their approach, but not these Pep disciples.  Enzo was the same.  The minute anyone has any doubts about my idea I will leave  I remember him petulantly saying, before sodding off anyway.

Martin is the same, proudly clinging to his belief like he's discovered a football cheat code.  Tightening his grip after every beating.

I think it's the intransigence that irritates me even more than the dull football.  How arrogant to ignore reality and plough on regardless.  Martin is the King Canute of football.

I'm not sure that's necessarily the case. To pick a few examples from the opposite end of the spectrum, are managers like Dyche, Allardyce and Pulis really any less wedded to their methods than Enzo or Martin?

Absolutely none of this matters.

It isn't going to be Martin, no matter how much the doomsayers that cling to our club want it to be.

What makes you say that? Do you think it's agent talk?

I think it's crappy media taking wild stabs at something that might happen in the hope of being seen as first to break the news - when there is none.

I’ve just heard this is 100% done. The person who told me also mentioned someone we are signing, and peoples heads are going to completely fall off lol

Did the person mention why, if it's 100% done, the club has not even announced RVN's departure—let alone Martin's arrival?

Oh good.  A thirty something Southampton reject?

Here are the current contract lengths left on Saints first team players...

June 2025

Kyle Walker-Peters, Joe Lumley, Adam Lallana.

Knowing us we would end up with Joanna Lumley, but no not a Southampton player.

No idea how accurate it is, but the person this came from knows enough people from different sources to think it’s probably legit.

Probably not accurate, but Josh Windass.

:( His stats were pretty good in the championship to be fair last year but 31 years old isn't really forward thinking signing.

Why would the manager rumour be accurate but not the player?

It might all be bollocks, but the person said they knew for a fact that Martin is our new manager and we were signing him.

Id agree with the above re stats and his age. I guess its needs must, probably cheap and effective.

I’d be well happy with that

13 goals in 44 appearances last season isn’t terrible

was he played as an attacking midfielder or as a forward ???

I think attacking mid, other than BEK we aren’t going to get remotely close to them numbers from another midfielder so it wouldn’t be the worst. Just not very inspiring is it.

If we hire Russell Martin and sign Josh Windass I’m done

I'm done if Brussell walks through the door.  (Until the club eventually sacks him after 3 boring wins in 15 matches)

I find it a bit weird how closely linked all these rumours are.

Like, suddenly linked to the Sheff Weds assistant manager but still hiring Martin (mixed up with Rohl rumour maybe?)
Linked with Josh Windass who did well at Rangers and would probably go back. (mixed up with Martin to Ranger rumour maybe?)

Dunno, feels like a lot of chinese whispers getting tangled up!
