And those were the managers we could get behind and would have done alright AND it would have cost them more initially but now it's costing them millions more for picking the cheap option in compensation, relegations and Cooper crap signings. 1

Personally didn’t know that, can only go on what I see in the pitch. Not surprised though, Russell tactics, ego, stubbornness and constant blame of others rather than take accountability will push everyone away.

Marti constantly spoke about Cruyff and Barcelona. Russell Martin is Russell Martin. Every appointment has been to fulfill Top’s dream of “playing like Man City”. The club have never deviated. There was no clear style of play under Cooper, Ruud, Marti or Rowett. I couldn't tell you whether we were possession, counter attack or what our philosophy was. It is clear with Martin that we are a possession based team. Whether that is how we should play is up for debate but it is clear what we are trying to do.

Right now, the only thing that's clear is that it won't work. He's had a pre-season and six competitive games to get a tune and he just hasn't. We've played teams that are likely to be bottom half come end of the season and we are looking more down than up. So not only does his 'style' not work, but he is incapable of doing anything different. When he then throws the youngsters under the bus instead of pointing at his experienced players, he's also showing a complete lack of accountability. Out. Now rather than tomorrow. 10
Stavros81 Posted 6 September Posted 6 September Echoes the Cooper appointment no one wanted the Slug and he was sacked after 12 games. I can see the same with Martin it’s only going to end one way. The sooner the better.

Popular Post Saint81 Posted 6 September Popular Post Posted 6 September Saints fan here. Just found this snippet from when we had 1 point from our first 9 premier league games. If Southampton are to go down, or Martin is to lose his job, it will be by committing to a gameplan he believes in. "I took the job [at MK Dons] nearly five years ago, with the club in the League One relegation zone and the chairman saying he didn't care if they got relegated if he could see something he believed in and could be proud of," said Martin. "There have been some moments of real difficulty at MK and Swansea and here, where you get questioned and have to make a big decision. "But if I end up losing my job at some point, which is inevitable, at least I can say I have stuck to what I want to be, as a person first, then a leader and then as a manager. "To get to the Premier League and then change would be illogical. I cannot stand on the sidelines watching something I don't feel connected with or love. I don't see the point in that." That requires Southampton's players to have courage to take the ball in tight areas, carry on passing when the pressure is at its greatest and not allow poor results or adversity to change that mindset. The bloke is crazy. He is prepared to lose every week so long as he loses playing his way. The last paragraph above sums it up, you’re down the bottom of the league with worse players than the rest of the league anyway, and you’ve got to try to Barcelona your way out of trouble. Absolutely nuts and it’s no wonder the players got totally disillusioned. This idiot Should be nowhere near managing a professional football team, where results are paramount. Clearly they aren’t to him. Total joker 19 1
Donwebbio Posted 6 September Posted 6 September (edited) It seems to me that the main feature of his style of play is playing high-risk passes in his own defensive 3rd in order to bait a press. The other feature is the CB's and non-inverted full back dominating possession in a fairly vertical way waiting for space to open up in front before ponderously working it forward. The major flaw with this seems to be that the slow build-up tempo allows the opposition to get back into their worked on defensive structure. To break that down you need a good level of technical ability and creativity to break theough the lines. You also need athleticism and awareness to guard against the counter when we are playing this aggressive high line but we have been absolutely honking against the counter. The fact Martin has no other way of playing and the inherent weaknesses we have in our squad means that teams can prepare all week for exactly what they are about to face with no danger of facing any flexibility. Clearly they aren’t to him. Total joker I know alot of us did not want him here. We see the results, read the forums from other supporters when he was with other clubs. Everyone and their mum knew he wasn't the right choice but we are run by a nepo baby who hasn't got a clue and is absolutely ruining his father's vision. Shameful! I can't wait for him to be sacked. We will fumble that though won't we? Everything we are currently going through is from sheer incompetence which is rewarded by nepo baby. Dark days ahead which sadly many other clubs have been through. 2
Jack1993 Posted 6 September Posted 6 September No chance we sack him yet because there’s a real danger that another manager could come in and get promoted with these players and the board would absolutely hate that. Best thing to do is hold it out until even a play off spot is completely out of the question then sack him and don’t employ anybody for a month in order to make relegation a genuine possibility! Leicesterpool Posted 6 September Posted 6 September (edited) Sadly unless we lose the next four games back to back I can't see Martin going anywhere, with King Power looking to sell up the last thing they want to do is pay another compensation fee with parting company with yet another manager. I think Martin as probably got till mid November and unless we are below 14th and in a relegation scrap he ain't going nowhere. You know for me I'm desperate for a change like everyone else and I'd even bring back Nige, which previously I've not been keen on but now we need some sort of feel good factor at the club. To do it you have to play inch and pace perfect passes from Keeper to Souttar to brayebrooke out the JJ back to Souttar and the back to the keeper, whilst being pressed. All the physical and mental energy just to go nowhere. Astonishes me why anyone thinks it’s the way forward. Not to mention how much time is wasted doing it, particularly when you’re inevitably chasing the game at the death.
Leicesterpool Posted 6 September Posted 6 September I don't the think board wanted to sack Marti Cifuentes, the only reason he was sacked was the decline in attendances which of course affected matchday revenue.
