Maybe he wasn't asked and put himself forward? There's still an element of more experienced players shirking responsibility but if someone wants to take one and seems up to it then I don't think there's anything wrong with it

You don't let the apprentice drive the van

If Ryan was a specialist or 7ft fair enough, it might have work psychologically. He didn't have a single touch or feel for the game, that was such a bad move. Likewise, having 2 CB's taking them first was strange. We all knew that was a risk with Souttar before he stepped up.

a string of calamitous  decisions by the Aussie manager starting with the GK sub.  The Aussie team has been let down by their manager.

Watching a YouTube compilation of the the oppo GK on a laptop just before a shootout obviously the way to go

They break the rules with that one? Not sure I've seen it before, or if it's allowed.

AND the cowardly attackers who didnt take a penalty.

Letting defenders and an 18 year old take them instead.

Spineless

Good result

The Aussies clearly rehearsed this, so he didn't put himself forward. To put an 18 a kid in such a high pressure situation, he'd have to be of a certain mental fortitude which he clearly wasn't. His whole body language was off.

Aussie's fault for having 2 CB's take penalties

Even CBs should know how to hit the effing target from the penalty spot. It's just an unforgiveable thing to miss the target altogether.

I think their captain kind of fxxked their shootout too in all fairness.

Not really a fan of bringing the keeper on for penalties.

I remember Van Gaal did it with the Dutch and he got idolised for it (despite the fact they couldn’t beat Costa Rica in 120 minutes) but then he didn’t do the same in the semi-final and his first choice keeper clearly wouldn’t have felt confident.

Unless you do it in the final you’re making a rod for your own back. He looks a bit of a prat now.

...and if they'd rehearsed it they'd probably be pretty confident he was a capable penalty taker? I'm sure if he had any doubts he'd have raised them, no one had a gun to his head

Both Thierry Henry and zlatan looking into the camera and speaking directly to Harrington and reaching out to him to console him. Zlatan  saying “ I’m here if you need me”.

Why the fvck do you have a centre half stepping up to take your first penalty.

Not just any centre half, but a centre half who's barely kicked a ball for the last few months.

Crazy decision and they've paid the price for it.

That's got to go down as one of the worst ever subs. Taking off someone who might well have been your player of the tournament, for someone who saves none.

Worth a go though
