It makes sense….. the US market is heavily investing in English football, and we’re somewhat of a famous name there now within the sports world, we’ve got the blueprint for a much bigger operation than the likes of Wrexham and Birmingham City, and if we get turned around it’s another amazing story……. 

 

It’s more likely an American investor takes us over, and it might be a fairly easy move for a consortium led by Todd, plus he’s not shy throwing money around, so he may feel like this is a good opportunity for him and another. 
 

There also plenty of NFL and NBA franchise owners sniffing around English football, so there’s a very strong chance someone else is interested and has approach Todd to form part of the consortium.

It would be good marketing spin to "rebuild the 5000-1 club". Would play well internationally as a story.

Growing up their heroes (and mine) were the likes of Steve Walsh, Robbie Savage, Iwan Roberts, Muzzy (my personal favourite). Great point. As city fans, It's only natural to feel let down by our downwards spiral, 10 years of bewilderment. But we did grow into a team the whole world talked about and thats still there, less prominent now but all was irreversibly changed when we won the premiership. Lashing out at a spoiled child who who didn’t dream his fathers dreams is as daft as not appreciating the impact of covid.

Don't think Wymsey would generally ever make himself out to be "an ITK" and I can't remember him ever making stuff up for attention. 

 

Think someone in his family has business connections that occasionally have dealings with the club or know someone that does. Either way, he gets told things every now and then that have been correct.

A name Im thinking is Mark Cuban. As a follower of the Mavericks, it appears that he is looking to invest in English football, and it’s not unrealistic to suggest he and Boehly could head up the consortium. 
 

It’s also worth noting that £200m is reasonable in the eyes of US investors. So it’s not as mad as we might think.

I was having a think about Boehly and his motivations.

 

A lot of the US sports franchises are driven by value, which actually seems to be the bigger thing to these billionaires rather than actually winning trophies. (Which isn't as flippant as it sounds, as on average, your US team would win the thing once every 30 years, so its not actually worth getting your hopes up for!) There are regular Forbes rankings of "my dick is bigger than your dick" franchise values.

Although the value is hypothetical until there is a part sale. The recent part-sale has just valued Liverpool at £5bn to £6bn (actually similar to the Dodgers' value a couple of years ago), so English football clubs are trending towards some of the biggest in the world. But there are very few clubs in England that are at that level of value, and they won't change hands very often. If you look outside the rich 6, there are only a handful of other clubs that have won the Premier Leauge, played in the Champions League and have that Worldwide recognition. So that would be the next place to look: and if you can buy cheap and get them to compete, the potential prize is billions.

And if he could invest a paltry £400m - £100m to buy the club, £100m to build the new stand, £100m for new players, £100m to fund wages for a couple of years: all it takes is a couple of promotions for us to be back in the Premier League and the value would rocket.

 

And my understanding of Chelsea is that he wants to be hands on and make decisions, but he doesn't have enough control to do that with Clearlake and the other shareholders. (I'm not sure who was driving the policy of young players on long term deals, but his name certainly comes up enough). Whatever his early ideas were about how to invest in a squad, he will have learnt a lot about English football over the last few years, and I reckon he'd want another go given the mess at Chelsea with bloated squads, unhappy players and underperformance.

So I can understand the appeal of getting fed up with the battle at Chelsea, (the fact you can't top being World Champions anyway) and deciding to just sell up and go somwhere he can have sole control. And following on from Wrexham & Birmingham, I can see the appeal of the story of taking a club in League One and going through promotions.

 

I don't know about his motivations for selling his stake in the Lakers (it might be as simple as Walter wants out to fund his legal battles and he will become marginalised with new buyers) but I don't think it is necessarily a stretch to see him cashing in on 2 sales and deciding we would make a great project to use that cash for.

He doesn't believe in promotion / relegation and the whole European system. He'll have no interest in messing around with a £2m TV deal and having to slum boardrooms with businessmen from such backgrounds as selling ice cream.

I hate to be a bore but there's little point in speculating at the moment. Citibank will keep their cards very close to their chest. Serious bidders don't want publicity right now. There could literally be as many as 50 to 100 parties what have pressed for further details. 

 

I would treat every rumour of any interested party with scepticism. It will go up a tick with first bids and then exclusivity to follow up.
