Apparently there is a betting market on Polymarket concerning the extent and outcome of the wildfires currently raging in various places. 

 

Can someone please find a story of a human or humans actually doing something good to stave off the sentiment that we're actually beyond saving, please?

The problem with this is that people can start fires to make money. Poly Market should be shut down. It been used to bet on the killing of thousands of people and it actually occurring. 

 

We currently living the worst sci fi novel without realising it.

It's Squid Game from a distance and for real. And yes, such harmful events could easily be manipulated to win a bet.

Wasn’t there a guy in France who bet on the average temperature in Paris or something. He found the data comes from some thermometer device in the airport, so took a hair dryer and heated it up til it reached the point and then cashed out his winnings.

There were reports recently of white working class students performing  badly in our schools

Previous reports have highlighted white male students particularly. 

I work in a school as a volunteer and have noticed a vast, vast majority of school publicity online, in the schools themselves and in student information booklets held in our school library, rarely portray white male students.

Try it yourself, Google any school related topic, click on images and see what appears.

Oh you'll get the odd white male student, but a very low percentage.

This news item currently on the BBC website is typical. Of the people shown - no male white student. In fact just one white male portrayed - approx 6%

Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised about the poor performances

Interesting observations that. Maybe the positive reinforcement has gone too far. But it's probably more complicated that that too. 

 

There's lots of cultural reason too.

It's cultural. Depictions of British society that feature only or mostly white people - whether those people are Brits or not - are seen as inherently problematic in this country. That's despite the fact that there are many places in the UK where it's very likely you will see only white people. Maybe some kind of subconscious nostalgia for empire or something, who knows...

I think this is victim mentality but I do recognise in writing that, that the argument you're making is effectively the same one minorities have used in previous years and I might have been inclined to see an issue. Which is interesting as it might be one of those things where all our beliefs deal depending who it is, which we would all call out, so I'll reflect on that. 

 

Long and short of it though, is that the reasons behind white working class boys (let's call them wwcb for short) not doing great is complex and needs addressing in a variety of ways, as we did with other groups previously. 

 

I think my core belief is that all sorts of groups face different sorts of problems and discriminations:

 

those experienced by wwcb, often around lack of expectation, role models, cultural issues amongst the group, economic factors etc

 

Those experienced by other groups around race, religion, sexuality etc. 

 

In the end, we need to recognise all structural failures and respond to them all, including these ones.

I take that opportunity of waiting for an assistant to come over, and scan and slot an item of shopping into the bag while I wait. 

 

It doesn't work to scan the item, and as such doesn't get added to the bill. But if they want me to operate a checkout machine without any training then they have to expect the occasional user error. I take it as my wages for doing their job for them.

the toilets in the Lidl where i shop have been "out of order" for about 2 years.

 

Obviously they just dont want people to use it so how about changing the signage in the car park that says they have a toilet
